Short rod for plastic and light lures?

I thought I'd put this here instead of the Tackle section because it's very specific for lure fishing, but fell free to move it.

I was thinking of getting a short rod (7ft?) for plastic and light lure shore fishing, including walk-the-dog pencils. I've got a 9ft 20-40g at the moment, so it would be for weights between 5-15, 5-20? Budget around 100 euros, give or take. Preferably available or "orderable" in tackle shops in Ireland (Dublin area?) for the question of warranties/returns. (A piece of a travel rod I bought on eBay broke and it's not worth sending it back to the shop...).

e.g. I've seen a Greys GRXi Spin, 7ft, 5-15g medium fast action for approx. 120 euro that looks the part.

Any ideas or suggestions, please? Cheers.

Hey I just bought a lucky craft ESG 8, 7" which is weighted 2-20g they are fairly pricey though, teamed with a daiwa certate its a deadly out fit for soft baits and really light lures. Fish six pound braid and get a bit of distance on lures as light as 2g's. If you are on a budget then shimano do some really nice light rods. I like greys but 7ft is a bit short for my needs, take a look at the shimano speedmaster its a nice bit of kit and affordable.

Can't say much bout those rods as i am not familiar with them.....casting weight wise they seem ok for the application.....The greys look promising...If you can afford to wait...just save a bit more....wait for a few month and go get the Lucky Craft rod....they re one fine lure rods...

Thanks for the replies. Perhaps I should consider 8 or even 9ft? You think 7ft is too short for the East Coast?

Those Lucky Craft look really! good but they are pricey alrite. Too dear for me at the moment. I think I'll try the show this weekend, see if I spot a bargain... :roll:

Pay attention to casting weight.....8' or 9' footer will do....with small reel and fine diameter braided line u can toss lighter softies maybe rig weightless or a very small micro spinner and spoon(mepps??) a long way for bass,pollack and seatrout.....cheeerrrss....

I have those mepps but with my 20-40g rod I won't even try casting them without added weight! :lol: :lol: I just wanted a shorter rod to travel even lighter and have even more fun (without wanting to kill the fish from exhaustion). I'll get the rod first then look for a reel for a nice balanced set-up I suppose. Cheers.

hi inigo,i can recomend the lucky craft esg rods,havnt had it that long but you can get a good distance with a 2g lure,and its designed for saltwater game so it should handle anything youre likely to meet on the east coast no problem.i can also recomend the lucky craft pluging performance range.the one i use is 9ft2in with casting range to 30g.again with this rod you can cast lures down to 7g a good distance with ease.the p/performance rods are cheaper too,and are covered by a guarantee.match with a 4000 shimano,or a 3500 daiwa you wont look back.its a little more than you budgeted for originally,but well worth it.hope this helps.

gruavell do some cracking spinning rods and some nice trigger grip baitcasting rods to and they are very resonable they also do telescopic ones that are very handy for transport i got a beachcaster 12 foot will cast up to 3 oz and have had big doggies on it ,the action isnt as good as a two peice but bite detection is good , alot of lads think telescopics are crap , take it from me for the money they will catch just as many fish and will take lots of abuse worth a look at i,v had my eye on a 13 foot sensi tip for a while now but will have to save a bit more (180 yo yo,s)a cracking rod mind you would be ideal for light shore work especialy bassing in surf ,i,ll keep dreaming for now though :lol:

Yeah will do joe, just waiting for the daiwa to arrive... inigo it will be difficult on a budget, fine braid will wind knot very easily so a quality line lay is essential so something small from shimano or daiwa should do the trick. Rods well ye kind of get what ye pay for but would del recommend going a bit longer than seven foot. There is a fine line with this type of lure fishing remmember that the fish you hook will most likely be in a channel where they can use the flow to their advantage so you still need some thing that will have a bit of power.. I had a fine mullet yesterday in the 4-5lb range on the ESG anf have to say it did the business. Cheers and good luck with the search! Good to hear from ye joe winter is nearly gone thank god!!! Trabucco do a lovely new 9ft rod - I use it with a small quantum baitcaster and braid. I love it - very light indeed. Rod costs about £55. Would be good with a small abu too.

Thank you all for the replies. I finally bought an 8ft Shimano Speed Master, 5-20g. I saw it on a Spanish shop for 85 euro, P&P to Spain included. Good excuse to visit the family and come back with it. Also waiting for a Shimano Stradic 2500FI with 8lb PowerPro... Will let you know how it goes when I get it all together in about a month's time. Can't wait!! :x
