Day out in the Northwest

Postby Greywulff » Sat Jun 09, 2007 3:36 pm

Hi all,

Well what can I say about this weather, "Unbloody Believable" Started at 9:30 to be on the water for the high tide, dropping two pop up lobster pots on the way out. Set up shop over a reef that runs from the shore where the tide deflects out along this reef.

Where would ya get it, Starting out.

The Bait.

Pollack after Pollack couldn't keep track of them. Note the drop off on the Fish Finder

Lots of Wrasse which took all day.

Best Wrasse of the day. Good old thump-er

Even made time to feed the locals.

What a day started out with 2 rods ledgered but couldn't keep up with the Wrasse , ended up using only one ledgered and spinning with a lead and 5 foot trace for the Pollack, Cracking Day and all from the yak.

All the best,

Wow Greywulff, looks like you'd a helluva day!
I've just bought a 'yak but not got it kitted out yet, probably have a few sessions in west Wales before I'm back over to Kerry (Valentia) end August. Really looking forward to it!!
Tell me, do you use a drogue or an anchor to keep you on the mark if you're legering?
Also, what happens to yr GPS / fishfinder if you roll...will they survive or is that the end of them??
Any tips much appreciated,
Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,

Welcome to yak fishing, Firstly I use an anchor to keep me over a mark positioning myself just off the mark as you would in a dinghy or large boat a drogue can be used to slowly drift you over area's but if there's a good swell running tide and wind in the opposite direction you can get very wet so on days like this I would either anchor up or just drift. Hope this helps.

As for the GPS, FF most are some what water proof but I always aim to upright the yak as soon as possible. The sockets and plugs on the Fishfinder have rubber seals and the buttons are water proof as well. But make sure to find out when purchasing that it is water proof. Also find the Garmin very good and its been in the water lots of times again the back of my unit has a rubber seal for the battery compartment and the buttons are waterproof as well. So it all good there then, Ive never had a problem and always wash them off with fresh water when I'm finished, also I find a shot of WD40 on the FF plugs help against corrosion.

Enjoy the yak it addictive,
