This is a list of what you my need to Kayak Fish, you can decided on the what and price to suit you, I'm not saying you have to get all of this but I would advise on the safety item side of things.

Wetsuit/dry-suit and boots Most people who sea kayak us the Dry suit as this allows you to kayak when the sea is colder.

First aid kit in water proof container. Again buy local €20/30 and us an Addis waterproof lunch box they are as good as any and will keep ur flares dry as well as the first aid kit.

These are the main items, and if you fancy getting into it in a big way might I suggest a VHF marine radio and get ur self the long range radio certification for craft under 12m. I'm doing mine this year.

the certificate you need for a vhf is a short range cert. Not a long range cert as mentioned. the short range license does not cover the use of a hand held vhf it only covers fixed vhf and a secondary hand held for the same license. basically what I'm saying is you cannot license a hand held on its own.

i vhf hand iv no licence but no licence but i only use it for lisening to weter reports and in case of emergancy nrver had to use it

Definitely is a short range cert and not a long range cert my apologies. But you can licence a handheld on its own without a fixed radio as the licence is the same for both you just have to register the radio after you obtain your operating licence. And costs between €200/250 to get the licence on a one or two day course. this is a link to course providers:

it is not the radio that is licenced it is the boat/ship that is licenced.you will have to register with comreg with your cert number and your ships details. you will also have to give them the details of the radio equipment you will register to that ship this radio has to be DSC equipped since April 7th 2001. the hand held would not have DSC therefore it would only be a secondary radio suitable for communications between the ship and it's tender or as an emergency radio if you had to abandon ship.

personally i don't need course providers info as i have done the DSC short range course a number of years back. BUT I WOULD STRONGLY RECOMMEND IT TO OTHERS.

John is that for Commercial or personal pleasure craft cause what I've been told by four or five of those guys registered to give the SRC is that for Handheld radios you do Module 1 And 2 of the SRC and Module 2 if you have the old licence, Once you obtain the operators licences which can be used on any vessel not just one because it's your licence not the craft's! You then register the Handheld to the craft not your licence using your cert number,

Handhelds can be purchased with DSC all over the world and not just America. But are still very expensive.

I'd personally would have anything that could give me a better chance of survival and "Voice Only" is better than no voice at all and you can still call for help without DSC.

greywulff question on the wetsuit is yours a full wet suit or long john and summer or winter suit

It's a Long John which gives freedom to move ur arms.
3mm (summer) as layers can be added, hard to take away with a 5mm suit or full wet suit.
