Bring a few disposable water proof plasters with you, they will do the trick.
also very handy if you have a run in with your filliting knife

my thumb is thicker than my fore-finger, so it should fit well. i use it and it works.
have you thought about getting some cricket bat grip and taping it to the blank, placing the grip on your finger and the line and then casting that way. place it close to the reel seat so it releases without interfering with the line.

Just have the wife cast for you
Seriously now, there is almost nothing a man cannot accomplish with a roll of duct tape in the tackle box. A band aid put on first provides a little more cushioning right at the crease of the finger. The callous will develop nicely after a while underneath the tape and you wont need it then anyway.
But maybe the braid is only cutting into your finger because it is slipping of the spool? When your casting your applying more pounds of pressure than the drag is set to and this causes the braid to slip and cut into your finger. You can try tighten your drag down more before each cast and then loosen it up again after the cast. Might sound tedious but surely is better than getting your finger spiked every time.

The Breakaway Cannon is good!!! I've used it when I was using braid for distance in matches. It takes a little getting used to but once mastered can be a great accessory to distance. The rod can be hit a lot harder when your confidence increases. Mind you I've stopped using braid on my distance rod so I no longer use the Cannon. My casting finger has welts on it from casting hard and I dont use a finger stall anymore. One exception would be when its raining and your skin gets soft it's advisable to use a finger stall.
