lads i have an old 5m rod i am rebuilding for fixed spool. i got some minima's for it. the rod was previously built with 8 rings. i got a multiplier set as i don't like the larger rings and want to start with a smaller butt ring and have an extra ring up nearer the tip(the rod will be used with mono under 10lb.)is there any point in reversing the butt ring? any thoughts/info would be great but please try to keep it simple as i am not very clever

tape the rings on and load the rod to see if everything looks good if it does have a few wangs to see if all is well before you put them on permanently
as for putting the first ring on backwards sure why not it defo wont affect the action and will give any coils of line less to get tangled in ,are you using a fixed reel seat? if so i supose you could tape that on aswell till you got it where you like it too

To get a guage on ring spacing I normally Glue on the tip eye. I lightly tape on the rest of the eyes with some thin masking tape. I just tape them into aproximate positions. I then run some twine through the eyes and fix it into position where the reel would be. I tie the twine to a cavity block or something heavy. You can now lift into the block with the rod to see what way the rod and rings will function under load. I adjust the rings until I'm happy with their spacing and I am sure I am keeping the line sufficiently away from the blank (multiplier) or the line has a good running profile under load (fixed spool)
The above works well if you don't have any manufacturer spacings.
If your rod was rung for multiler, you might want put the rings on the opposite side of the blank as if built correctly in the first place, this is likely to be the soft side of the blank.
Let us know how you get on Mark.
