casting help?

Fri Aug 05, 2011 9:07 pm

Hi lads, not sure where to start and where to finish, ok, i'v start to practise distance casting several months ago and in very begining while watched a videos everything was looked easy enough, like, wind up, cast and thats all :?
i'd useing 15ft beachcaster and penn525mag, well someone could say that these things are far to good for beginner, but i found them confortable enough, but may issue isn't there :?:
from very beginning i practise on pendulum cast mostly, follow by john holdens technique
and now there is my problem :for very begginig i'v set my reels magnet almost close , wind up, shoot my sinker in this case 125g, everything looks going smooth enough, but every second my casts or even every ends with tangle a reel well not as messy as birds nest, but tangles anyway
unless i keep my finger over a reel and slow it bit by bit, but doing that only discrees my distance thought, :?:
So, where could be my problem weather in technique or i'v just wrongly operating a reel, i couldn't figur it out so far
May somebody be able to help me some way please
the reel contents 15lb runner line and 60lb shock leader

you need to get a video up of you casting for a start , reel issues could be down to a number of things , line lay , mag setting , ??????????

Hi Grady, maybe ye should go to one of the casting days out or contact one of the casting clubs and maybe tag along at one of their outings. I'm sure one of these would be helpful. I see a post up here for the down casting association. Give them a shout..

Yes,best to get along to a casting day. There is Sportscast Ireland in Wicklow, Down Casting Association in County Down, and Ulster Casting Club on the North coast.

99% of those long continental style rods are only designed for over head thumping with very light lines, be carefull as ive seen quite a few break when lads try power-casting them....

i was trying several different sorts of casting last night and can submit that overhead or off the ground technique were succesfull i think
never messed a line even once, well compare to the profecional casters distance weren't such a great, well i'd say up to 150 yards with no rigs and baits
i took advice of paddyc and have used just light and gentle lift, thanks paddy
also cheers to everyone for your responding
