Up or down?

I fish with multipliers and have always set my gear up with the reel up but have recently been wondering if there are any advantages to casting with the reel down.

I can pendulum and OTG cast and can hit reasonable distances so the question is should i change and try the reel in the down position. If i do am i likely to achieve more distance?

not really, if your happy with what you are doing and the cast is good , you can seek out advice on where to get a few extra yards from an instructor but its not down to where the reel is on the rod,

if you want more distance get casting lessons off the lads in sport cast ireland. im fishing over 20 years and tought i knew how to cast. thats until these lads got hold of me and let me know how many bad habits i had. when i got it half right i gained 30 yards. what these lads dont know about casting is,nt worth talking about.

why not in the middle if you decide to go reel down wear long sleeves nothing worse than seeing grown men crying on the casting court! (you know who you are! )

go low dude, its a more powerful but smoother cast, easier on bait and travels a very long way when required

I moved to a down position last year. Once you get used to it is is very hard to go back. I sometimes do when I'm fishingn with the rod in hand or when the waves are hitting the bottom of the tripod.

When fishing with the reel up, you right arm is doing everything and when lokoing for those extra yards, sometimes it's hard to grip the spool and focus on the hit with the same arm, this is when mistakes happen.

When casing in the low position, you left hand is gripping the spool. This can be arkward as fook for a little while, but once you get used to it becomes second nature. It shouldn't take too long. Once this transistion happens you can focus on your hit with the right arm for those extra yards.

used to fish up myself, but changed quite a few years ago to down, helped my distance and definately felt more comfortable and smoother. Some people will tell you that fishing reel down is really only suited to rods over 12ft9 in length, im sure some of the guys here can tell you if thats an urban myth or not!
indeed i bought a pair of rods that were built for reel up, went out to try them and found it extremely weird!, have dropped one of them already to reel down so must get a couple of reducers ordered for them!

i have only started using the reel down a few months ago, felt really strange at first, so just kept the casts to fairly short ones. when i got used to it i just let fly!!!!! and i could really feel the difference in the rod, it seemed to load far better and i could feel the power in it, and now i can hit a far better distance.
