wondered had any other members any feedback on this man,
more or less the father of modern-day casting, on these shores uk-
and ireland, but never gets a mention in any casting magazines or
sites. this question would maybe suit the more mature student of
the game , rockhopper maybe ,

Ya know Stevo, I have searched high and low for a website I once had saved that mentioned quite a bit about the guy....like how he helped design the old Abu Zoom rods etc.....if I find it I will post a link.

BTW...he was a little before my time (I'n not that old) but I do know a few guys who knew him.

thanks tom, have heard he used to do casting demos using the 484-
zoom, and casting anything upto 16 oz with the rod, he regulary hit
iwas told 160 -170 yards with 8oz and 20lb line the diameter being
0.45, or even more, he was also paramount in perfecting the pendulum
cast , pity their wasnt alot written about the man,

Not only rods and reels were developed by some of these guys, but many other bits and bobs we take for granted today.

great stuff tom, great read, stunning distances when you think about
what gear was available to them at that time, would be interested to
try and maybe replicate the 23ib 6oz, i have a 484 zoom ,havent got the
right reels but a heavier 7000 would maybe suffice. will be certainly
giving it a go , all the best tom, will put up some distances ,just for
comparison,

gave it a few casts this evening, 484zoom ,daiwa procaster converted,
0.45mm line, 6oz, best cast was 183 yards, funnily enough with the
brighton, off the ground were just falling short of that , but over -all the
484zoom is still a cracking rod.

had a few casts with the 484zoom and mag-elite 031, 150gms
, 230yards, not bad for a old rod ,

Hi guys. I think you'll find that the Abu 484 was designed with the aid of Peter Bagnall.
Leslie Moncrieff was probably most famous for the Hardy Longbow rods and the Moncrieff springheel!! both rods featured Moncrieffs innovative Reverse taper which made good distances available to even average casters. The reverse taper concept has been toyed with by a few modern manufacturers but has'nt taken off.
Moncrieff did'nt just concentrate on beach rods he also designed a boat rod where the but was offset to the main blank via an angled bracket giving a perfect line up with the rings, all in all Moncrieff was a very forward thinking angler.

cheers chopper, i also have read about his modified reels, which he
cobbled together using bits from television sets and other what-nots, they
were apparently works of art,
