empty spool??

Postby Kraken » Fri Sep 07, 2007 4:50 pm

Was out practising on weds using a 525 with 20lb line and 6oz
weight- on my second last cast I got brave and took
off the mags - gave it a good lash and to my surprise
I emptied the spool of all but 9 or 10 turns off line

or so I thought....

what actually happened was the spool fully emptied
and at the end of the line it kept rotating and started to
wind line back onto itself  :?

Has this happened anyone else?? Is it normal or am I
doing something wrong??

yep. you need a good spool knot though and at a guess i would say it emptied just as it hit the water or just after or the spool would have stopped dead.

Worth checking the diameter of the 20lb line as some are .45 like daiwa sensor and leeda stingray (YUK). You can load a .4mm 20lb line higher than .35 as the spool diameter will reduce faster naturaly breaking the reel due to reduction in the fly wheel affect and amount of line given out per turn of spool

Spool was as "full" as I dared to go (about 1-2mm below lip) - have checked the dia of the line and it works out at .41 (ish) - converted from inches.

Gonna respool with lower dia line (down to 14lb- dont know the dia yet) and see how I get on with that.

1/2mm under the lip is just about right for a full spool,
thats some serious distance,
The 525 holds- 275yds/15lbs 250mtrs/0.40mm
so that would leave you roughly 40yds of the world record,,!!!
what rod were you using,,,?

Jaysus - that doesnt seem right or possible .....

I was (and still am) using a greys platinum XS.

Have rechecked and recalculated line dia - its .017inch which converts to 0.43mm That'll bring me back a bit eh?? :D

Need to get onto a court and measure a cast properly...
Then I can be put back into my box
