Oiling Bearings

Postby Liamo » Fri May 25, 2007 11:57 am

Lads,

Anyone any tips on the best way to oil bearings on any of our normal shore casting reels?

Some guys just put a few drops on and tell me it soaks through the dust cover, others claim you have to heat the oil to thin it and drop the bearings in, others claim you can over oil a bearing that way? I dunno, looking for opinions...

liamo, all i do is to submerge them in a small container with lighter fluid for a few mins, rattle them around and let them sit for another min, then take them out and place on some kitchen roll to dry out completly, then choose the oil you want and place 2 big drops on top and let it soak in. 2 drops is plenty as yes they can be over filled which only slows them.
If they have been in the reel for a very long time you may want to remove the dust covers just to make sure they are fully cleaned out in case there is dirt or grit inside, once oiled up remove any exess oil and run kitchen roll throuhg the hole just to take the exess out from the inner race before putting them back in the spool and back into the reel.
The idea of heating the oil in the old days was to thin it out and which also helped the oil to cling to the balls inside after cooling, they were not as light as modern day oils back then. hope this answers you "Q"

PS: How are you getting on with the AWB???

first time i did an abu i used two drops on both sides of each bearing and the next time i used the reel it had slowed a lot when i opened it up the oil was everywhere even the brakeblocks were oiled up so just two will do :D
