Reel(or rod?) problems.

I was doing some practice today and the reel kept nesting up just at the release of the lead.....dose anyone know what might be wrong? i tried with the reels running fast and slow but it still happened. it only happened on a otg, aerialised otg and a pendulum(sort of  ). 4oz lead and .37 line on a century carbon metal. I was also casting an overhead thump and it wasn't happening.

Thanks.

Could be line lay on the spool - was the line even?

If the line was bedded into itself - this might be the prob

Otherwise it might just be your casing Alex....

Try your OTG with a nice easy lob - minimal power.

Get this right before trying aerilised or pendulum.

You are most likely putting in too much efort....

without seeing you cast its nearly impossible to say. but it might be down to spool grip if its not happening with an off the ground cast it might be because you are generating more power with the pendulem cast and a slight spool slip at the start of the cast will result in line lift especcially when line is wet, use some sort of grip on your thumb like a piece of bike tube for a grip and see if it helps.

Is there any play in the spool if you try to move it from one side plate to the other. All the break blocks and magnets in the world won't stop a birdy if there is play in the spool. Not sure what reel you use. on the abu's its thre silver cap on either side of the side plates tha remove this play. Ofter forgot to check it after servicing the reel.

:? it really sounds like a fast reel? reel spool spins fastest at start of cast. will blow up if running too fast. try slowing your reel down more? what reel is it? even a bad cast on a slow reel should not birdy up??

i cant overhead thump on my multipliers or they birdie every time. the only time i had problems like u mention was with a reel that was too fast. sometimes a magnet had popped out on the penn reels or i had knocked the external breaking off without knowing.

go up to a 5oz lead- might take the whip out of the cast?

Its a 7ht turbo....it was happening when i had it running fast or slow.

.37 is a very thick line for casting. 150g would be on .31 and 125g would be on .28.

The 7HT Turbo is a fast reel, so reduce the line on the reel. You probably have it level with the edge of the spool, so take some line off to make the line level about 2mm from the edge of the spool instead.

This will help until you smooth out your cast.

Thanks for all the replies.....37 is thick but its daiwa sensor and i use it for fishing....can anyone reccommend a good .31 bulk casting line?

prob with thinner diameter lines is ur limited to over certain grounds, teklon have a very low diameter line but will perish on heavy ground...penn surf is grand line, but i dunno what it dia is?

mabey.....im really just looking for alot of .31 line so i dont have to worry about getting a birdy.

Maybe I missing something but it doesn't make sense to that a large diamater line would cause a birdy. Larger diameter line should slow down the reel as the diameter would reduce more quickly giving out less line faster. There could be any number of reasons why your getting a birdy. Low diameter lines would make your situation worse. I've cast 0.4mm on the old 7ht and no problems. Is this a new reel or has it be working all along. Have you been power casting with multis ok up till now? I presume you the break blocks in.

I am currently using Sakuma nite crystal in all 3 dia,s and yes its good/cheap but i do find its a bit lite,, and in a cross wind it tends to lift considerably compared to the likes of daiwa T or penn,s long distance beach.
