Match Report - First Leg, Deelis Strand

There was a good turn out despite the weather with no less than 19 anglers turning up to take part in this brand new competition. Their number included some non-club members - it was great to have them take part.

Fishing was not at its very best - no doubt the conditions will have influenced this also. Nevertheless a total of 53 fish were caught during the short, 3 hour competition with only a tiny handful of competitors blanking. The total catch was made up of 44 Flounder, 5 Three Bearded Rockling, 2 Dogfish, 1 Garfish and 1 Bass.

The winner on the night with a highly creditable 14 fish was John Lynch - great to have you back fishing John. Second place went to Chris O'Sullivan and Eugene Farrelly took the third sport.

The biggest round fish was caught by Luke M O'Sullivan (Peg 14) with a Garfish of 64 cm.
The biggest flat fish was caught by Chris O'Sullivan (Peg 11) with a Flounder of 34 cm.
The Golden Peg rolls over to next week as the pegs that were drawn were peg 6 for the round fish pool and peg 7 for the flat fish pool.

The next M.N.L. will take place at the SPA on the 23 May from 8.00pm to 11.00pm.
Check in at the Oyster Tavern Car Park from 7.00pm to 7.30pm

With the best four competition results counting towards the final league placings there is still everything to play for and those not available for the first leg should consider participating in the subsequent rounds of the competition.

Leg 2 The SPA

We were down a few numbers from the 1st Leg which could have been due to the weather conditions but a respectable 16 anglers took part in last nights 2nd Leg.

Its still all to play for for the anglers that didn't make it as the best four results count.

There was 6 species caught with a total of 64 fish with no one blanking and all fish being returned to fight another day.

The species were made up of 26 Flounder, 17 Eels, 15 Dogfish, 4 Rays (All Thornbacks I Believe), 1 Coalfish and 1 Dab.

The winner on the night John Lynch with 6 fish who caught a nice thornback ray on his 1st cast measuring 77cm head to tail who was later pipped by by Phil Ord with a 78 cm Thornback ray for the biggest round fish.
Second place went to Patrick Egan and Eugene Farrelly took the third sport.

The biggest round fish was caught by Phil Ord (Peg 15) with a Thornback of 78 cm.
The biggest flat fish was caught by Chris O'Sullivan (Peg 9) with a Flounder of 36 cm.
The Golden Peg rolls over to next week as the pegs that were drawn were peg 3 for the round fish pool and peg 4 for the flat fish pool.

The next M.N.L. will take place at Banna (Car Park 3) on the 6th of June from 8.00pm to 11.00pm. Check in at Car Park 3 from 7.00pm to 7.30pm

Match Report - Third Round, Banna Strand

A fair surf on Banna Strand as the competitors set up for Round 3 of the competition

The weather was again a factor with this leg of the competition with a cold, brisk breeze present all evening. Whoever it was said that there is no such thing as bad weather - just a bad choice of clothing wasn’t thinking about having to wear chest waders and several layers of clothing in June and still feeling cold!

The fishing was not at it best with quite a few competitors blanking. This was disappointing as indications from those venturing into the cold and wind for freelance sessions had reported good, varied catches. The impact of these 'zero returns' have had a dramatic affect on the leader board with some of the competitors dropping well down the table. However, the leaders hung on to their positions going into the next round. Nevertheless, this match demonstrated just how much ground can be gained by a single good result - and how costly a 'blank' can be.

Overall 4 species were caught with a total of 27 fish recorded and returned to fight another day. These were made up of 21 Flounder, 1 Plaice, 1 Turbot, 2 Bass and 2 Painted Rays.

The winner on the night was Aiden o Sullivan with 8 fish made up of 6 Flounder, 1 Bass and 1 Painted Ray. Second place went to Luke M o Sullivan with 4 fish and Martin McGowan took the third spot with 3 fish.

The biggest round fish was caught by Aiden o Sullivan (Peg 4) with a Painted Ray of 63 cm. The biggest flat fish was caught by Luke M o Sullivan (Peg 11) with a Flounder of 32 cm.
The Golden Peg rolls over to next week as the pegs that were drawn were peg 14 for the round fish pool and peg 1 for the flat fish pool.

The next M.N.L. will take place at Inch on the 27th of June from 8.00pm to 11.00pm. Check in at Car Park from 7.00pm to 7.30pm.

Match Report - Inch 4th Round, 27 June

It was good to arrive at Inch last night as the weather was great compared to the previous M.N.L. comps.

Fishing conditions seemed perfect with a nice surf and a bit of colour in the water only for there to be a lot of weed which made fishing difficult.

The lower numbered pegs got most of the weed which is reflected in the number of fish being caught but we soldiered on through it and a respectable 69 fish were caught and returned. Of these 60 were flounder with a lot of them undersized and 9 bass which made an appearance when the weed eased off a bit.

The winner on the night was James O’ Shea with 13 fish made up of 12 flounder and 1 bass. Second place went to Phil Ord who soldiered through the weed to catch 5 fish made up of 1 flouder and 4 bass and third place went to Eugene Farrelly with 6 fish made up of 4 flounder and 2 bass.

The biggest round fish was caught by John Sheehan (peg 6) with a bass of 46cm just pipping Phil Ord's bass of 45cm.

Chris must be doing something right as it’s his third time being in the flatfish pool only for his peg not to be drawn for the golden peg.

The Golden Peg rolls over to next competition as the pegs that were drawn were peg 12 for the round fish pool and peg 15 for the flat fish pool.

The next M.N.L. will take place at Barrow Strand on the 11th of July from 9.00pm to 12.00pm. Check in at Car Park from 8.00pm to 8.30pm.

Its the last competition and a lot can happen with a lot of people closely matched so the leader board could change so make sure to bring your A-Game...

Just to keep the suspense going for a little longer this match report provides the minimum of detail. To find out the final placings you will have to come along to the West End bar next Sunday night when the announcement will be made and prizes awards - around 8pm. This will immediately follow the prizegiving for our Temple Street Children's Hospital Charity competition. Everyone is welcome to take part in that competition and you will be made very welcome.

For our many friends who live elsewhere in the world the full results will be posted early next week. In the meantime - here are a few hints of the final placings.

The weather Gods were on our side for this final competition of the M.N.L. but maybe too much so as the sea was a bit calm for our liking. We were hoping for a bit of a surf to maybe catch a few bass but the water was flat so the anglers taking part probably had to
change tactics as they walked to their pegs.
15 anglers took part in Barrow which was going to be a tightly fought contest with John Lynch and Eugene Farrelly looking to take first place overall - depending on their result on the night.
There were also a number of anglers looking to take the rest of the positions depending on their results in this leg.
It was a tightly fought competition with only one fish separating anglers at times as league positions shifted constantly as darkness fell.

34 fish were caught with the majority of them being turbot and flounder with a lot of them being undersized.
