Could be a tough one if it's calm with the bait restrictions, but it is a real leveler.....

any takers on where this is coming from?
have to agree with dave on this one bait restrictions are a backward move designed to punish the more dedicated anglers.

Fished Benone a couple of times over the last years, Can be a cruel place even when your fully stocked with a range of baits, can maybe understand banning something like peeler in big open comps.at a push but to ban is rag doesnt make any sense. my prediction 80% blanks and everyone walking away dissapointed.

DISASTER
Wed Apr 15, 2009 8:54 am
I think it should be put out who made this decision. They are obviously not anglers and probably a little ditached from reality.
This needs to be looked at and changed straight away. Why make one of the premier competitions in the country a lottery.
The person that wins this comp is the captain of the home nations team. He should deserve it.
Benone is one of the worst match venues in the country yet it is constantly fished just because it is big enough.
Sure why dont we just all send in our entries, central council have a raffle and let us know who wins. You can post out ther trophy to us.
Its gonna be keys in a bowl time again
I call for this bait ban to be lifted and while we are at it a venue change.

Just to let you know
There will be NO bait restrictions.
On a personal matter Rampant !
I have been fishing for over 40 years , been on the World Shore Team , 2 Home
Nations Teams and 4 Interprovincial Teams.
Due to the unfavourable response to having bait restrictions we will revert to
All Baits

This is how all Irish teams should be picked

Save everyone wasting there time with the antiquated ridiculous IFSA selection system . The results wouldn't be much different !!!!!!!
Nothing to be proud of making an Irish team, never has been BUT THINGS ARE GOING TO CHANGE
BIG TIME
Dave.

Last years venue for the 2008 jimmy smith was a real winner....about 80% of anglers blanked!
Benone is a good as any other beach.
It's time for a clear and HONEST discussion on this.
Whets our options?
Do we interview for the positions? And then is it still the best interview from each province? What happens if a province doesn't get a representative? Who does the interviews? Which comps count? Which don't? Does a guy that can afford to fish more comps have a better chance than a guy who doesn’t have the money? Is he then the better angler because he has more money? Do we pick a guy who fishes with crab all the time to go to a venue that never uses crab? All home nations use worm and mackerel which are supplied so do all qualifying matches need to go to bait supplied? If so will they be 3 times the price?
I'm not stating a view here yet! Just trying to open this up to discussion...add more questions but better still answer these.
Marc

i think we have to look across the pond for the solution to this one england operate a selection process to decide who represents their country and in fairness their results speak for themselves.
i also think its about time we had an irish version of the penn league (possibly ran through SAI website?)
be interested to hear your suggestions/solutions Dave & JP

Interesting opinions rocketman... Forgive my ignorance, but does the Penn League influence the English Team selection or is it just a league that lets people know who's who and who's doing well?
Thanks,
Kev

hey mac as far as i know the league doesn't directly influence selection process it starts with an application system which includes a cv of match wins so obviously if an angler is making a name within the penn league the slectors would take notice.

The Irish system is fair to the anglers but unfair to Ireland. A team needs to be selected by people who have the knowledge to see who is best for a venue among other things. If an angler comes 2nd 9 times out of 10 it would be better to have him on your team than an angler who wins the biggest match of the season and comes knowhere every other time. As an Englishman who hears the feedback from other Englishmen beleive me, Ireland could put a fantastic team together if a selection process was in place...you have enough good anglers
Cost wont come into it if the angler has to apply. You just may have to leave your best guy at home if he cant afford the trip to say Brazil or Argentina, unless a funding solution can be found.
Banning bait is ridiculous......like the fish around our shores are in that much abundance we need to make them harder to catch

I think we should ban banning
I will probably get banned now
Tom.

In Theory a team selection process is a very good idea. Your countries best get picked for the team.
Problems arise on how you decide who is the countries best. In England is virtually impossible to get on the team unless your self employed, and rich, unmarried/divorced (because your fishing 3 matches a week mayb 4) and willing to travel upwards of 15000 miles a year to matches trying to bolster their cv's, not saying this is a bad thing but for mere mortals is virtually impossible.
And after all that your not gauranteed results. Only 1 English angler finished in the top 20 in the 2008 World Shore championship. But just think this was Ian Golds 19th time fishing a world championship in a row, wot experience.
Englands results are so good over the years because the same guys have being fishing internationally for years and years, they know the system inside out, and when a new guy eventually gets on the team all this previous experience is handed down and tactics refined.
In Ireland we dont have Chris Clark or Ian Golds, we do have fantastic anglers who can beats these guys on their day, but their are only a handful or less anglers in ireland with the international experience of teams like England.
If we are talking about improving team results and not individual glory, that culture can only be brought about with time and patience and a willing to share experiences and knowledge throughout the team. There is no room for elitism in team fishing.
I Believe if a committee of some of the guys with the said previous experience and knowledge of international competition was set up with a mandate to changing that culture and improving tactics, refining the way a person can qualify for the team that is fair and not based on monetary worth, and also is in charge of generating finance for interantional teams....ireland would be making steps in the right direction to seriously take on international competitions.
At the end of the day money is behind most of the results you see in interantional competitions. (Recon trips, Ass. Managers, Runners, Rig tiers, And in the case of the italy team a sports pycologist for when you blank.)Ultimatley the better a team is prepared the better the results will be.
Open to criticism......
