Great Turnout - and an Excellent Day
The decision to fish the Cashen Open in March rather than in April as we had done in previous years was a brave one. In the run up to the match there was much talk about the lack of crabs in the estuaries and the generally poor fishing resulting from the cold weather. However, the week prior to the competition was glorious – clear blue skies and bright sunshine – and with it a few more crabs in the tyres! So what might we expect on the day?
As competitors congregated at the car park below the golf course there was a real buzz in the air. It was a relatively still morning with the promise of good sunshine later in the day. The Waterville club had fished the South side of the estuary the previous day and sport had been patchy. There was the customary excellent turnout with 37 anglers taking the field.
In anticipation of a good turnout the venue had been pegged ‘snugly’ avoiding the problematic sandbanks and weed snags that have caused competitors problems in the past. Most anglers had arrived well ahead of time and just about everyone was poised and ready for the ‘off’ at 10am.
Conditions were perfect – little or no weed – a slack breeze and the tide still going. Anglers fishing in the middle section were delighted when fish took their baits almost as soon as they hit the water. Some anglers fishing the lower numbers upstream had similar early success with quality fish coming steadily. Unfortunately the mid section of the venue then went very quiet although the early success the lower number pegs continued in waves throughout the match.
During the latter half of the competition the downstream pegs started to pick up fish with a number of double and treble hits being reported. One angler in this section took 9 good flounder in the last hour.
When the dust settled and the scorecards were totalled up the upstream pegs – with their steady catching throughout the match – had won the day with first, second and third place all in the this section. The winner took an impressive 13 quality Flounder and the biggest fish - a 46cm specimen Flounder came from the same section.

Junior Results
3rd Place - Michael Kelliher
2nd Place - Jennifer Locke
1st Place - Anthony Linnane
Michael has featured in the match prize list in the last 3 competitions - that's great consistency!
Senior Results
3rd Place - John Sheehan
2nd Place - Conor Dwyer
1st Place - Martin McGowan
John Sheehan took the best fish pool with a magnificent Flounder of 46cm. John asked me not to mention in the report the amount of cash awarded from our extremely generous prize fund - so I won't.
The prizegiving took place at the excellent Lowes Bar, Ballyduff where competitors received a warm welcome and an excellent meal to finish off the day. Tom O'Grady once again sponsored the junior prizes. We are truly blessed as a club to receive such generous support.
In all it was an excellent day and it was good to see so many visiting anglers from Waterville, Cork and even Yorkshire. We hope you all enjoyed your day and we look forward to seeing you all at our next competition.
The next competition is again an open competition to be fished at the SPA on 12 April 2-6pm
