2 – DAY FESTIVAL INFORMATION 2008

Dear Competitor.

Waterville Shore Angling Club would like to welcome you to their “2-Day Angling Festival” which will be held on Reenroe beaches in South Kerry. The event once again is sponsored by “The Bayview Hotel” Waterville which is also the HQ for the weekend. The following is offered as a guide for the weekend’s events.
Fishing will take place on Reenroe beach on Saturday 1st November, fishing 14.00 – 19.00 (H/W 17.54 – 3.3m) and Sunday 2nd November on the golf course beach fishing 14.00 – 18.30 (H/W 18.32 – 3.2m). Entry €70 - pre-book only, closing date 9pm on 30.10.08 It is a pegged and zoned event and limited to 42 entries - I.F.S.A. members only. Temporary membership available €10. Pegs will be drawn for beach positions – each peg will be 20 yards apart – and competitors must remain in these positions throughout the match. Parking on beach will be at competitors own risk and if you choose to do so it must be behind your peg marker.
There will be three zones, each with a maximum of 14 anglers. Each zone will have stewards located on pre-arranged pegs, fish should be placed in a container and taken to a steward for measuring and recording before the next cast is reeled in. Only live fish will be accepted. A non fishing steward will be on hand to sort out any discrepancy, their decision will be final. The top five positions in each zone each day will receive a cash prize. The top four over-all winners will receive a cash prize and there is also a cash prize for the longest bass recorded over the two days – N.B. all cash prizes depend on entry. The festival will run on a catch and release basis.

DAY 1 Only bait supplied by organisers can be used on day one, the cost of the bait is included in the entry fee, bait consists of 10 black lug – 10 sand eels – 5 razor fish – 1 mackerel and 4 crab. All competitors will receive the same amount of bait which is blast frozen and supplied by KB Atlantic Baits. No other baits or additives to be used.

DAY 2 Any bait can be used on day two and competitors have to organise their own supply.

POINTS SYSTEM – fish points will be awarded as follows:
10 points will be awarded for every fish over 20cm and 1 point per cm – all fish will be measured DOWN! i.e.: a fish of just over 36cm will be awarded 36 points plus 10 fish points to give a total of 46.
Exceptions
Bass between 20 cm and 42 cm will be awarded 10 points per fish and 1 point per cm.
Bass 43cm and over will be awarded 10 points per fish and 2 points per cm.
Dogfish and Garfish will be awarded 35 points – total.
Eels 20cm – 60cm - 25 points - total
61cm – 80cm - 50 points - total
81cm plus - 100 points - total
Tope must be over 100cm and will be awarded 150 points – total.
Stingrays will be awarded 40 points per fish plus 2 points per cm.
Other rays will be awarded 10 points per fish plus 2 points per cm.

NB. All rays will be classed as round fish and measured across the wings. Bass will be measured to the tip of the tail.
Steward’s decision is final.
Mackerel, scad, sandeel, weavers and any game fish are not eligible.

ZONE WINNERS will be the anglers with the most fish points. Zone points will be awarded as follows – Zone win = 1pt – Zone 2nd = 2pts and so on down to 14 pts for 14th position. Anyone who fails to catch will receive double the points of the highest scorer in their zone, e.g. 9 anglers catch – 9th receives 9 pts, positions 10 to 14 each receive 18 points, if only five catch then positions 6 to 14 score 10 pts each.

OVER-ALL WINNERS will be the anglers with the lowest zone points total over the two days.
If there is a tie MOST FISH will decide, if there is still a tie the longest single fish will decide.

RULES I.F.S.A. rules apply except:-
Only one rod with a maximum of three hooks can be used (doubles count as two, trebles count as three hooks). A spare rod may be assembled, but without terminal tackle attached.
Any amount of spare traces can be prepared and baited up – artificial lures and ground baiting are permitted.
Wading is only allowed when casting and competitors must return immediately to the beach.
Casting in front of neighbouring anglers is not permitted. If pendulum casting, a shock leader of 60lb is recommended
Accidentally foul hooked fish will be allowed for match purposes, but not for specimen claims.

If traces get tangled with a fish on, the competitor whose hook is in the fish can claim it – if both angler’s hooks are in the fish, neither can claim it.
Assistance may be given in landing a fish if the angler so wishes.
All fish will be returned alive; any damaged fish will be retained by the stewards and distributed to the elderly within the community. No fish to be retained by the competitors.
Undersize fish to be returned immediately.
At the end of the match lines must be reeled in immediately and any fish hooked will count. Steward’s sheets should be checked and signed, as mistakes cannot be rectified later. No litter to be left on the beach.
POOLS
Two optional pools per day will operate - split 50% - 30% - 20%. N.B: only one prize per pool per angler.
Pools will be for the longest round fish (excluding dogfish, garfish, eels and tope) and longest flat fish – both days. €5 each pool per day.
In the event of no fish being caught in any of the prize-winning positions or pools – those prizes will be raffled off.

Any complaints must be in writing and handed to the match organiser within one hour of the end of the match accompanied by €25. If the complaint is upheld the €25 will be returned, if not it will be donated to a local charity.
Anyone found cheating will be disqualified from the whole event with no refunds and will have their names printed in the angling press.
Trophies and replicas will be awarded but the perpetual trophy will remain with Waterville S.A.C – replicas to become the property of the angler.
If there are less than forty two entries cash prizes and zones will be adjusted accordingly.
If entries don’t reach the required numbers the club reserves the right to cancel the competition with a full refund.
The club also reserves the right to change venues.

ABOUT THE FISHING
Reenroe and the golf course beaches are part of Ballinskelligs bay, they are both surf beaches, Reenroe is snag free while the golf course has some rocky areas but tackle losses are minimal – both have little or no tide rip, although a grip lead would be advisable. Fishing will be up to and over high water on Reenroe on day one (H/W 17.54). and up to high water on the golf course beach on day two (H/W 18.32). Care will have to be taken on the golf course beach as the tide rises and a move onto the sea wall will be necessary. Like anywhere, fishing is unpredictable with so much depending on sea conditions – if the wind is in the east or north the sea will be flat making catching difficult – the best fishing being when the surf is up – especially for bass. With good conditions, flounder, bass, dogfish, coalfish, mullet and rays may be caught; with dogfish and coalfish coming on as daylight fades (some form of light will be needed). Bait – lug/sandeel/mackerel/razor/ragworm and crab are all likely to catch fish. Distance casting is no real advantage except maybe for dogfish.
