Tope baits

Whats everyones top tope baits? Mackeral? Thats what everyone seems to use. But I've been reading up about them all morning and afternoon and apparently whiting and dabs followed by gurnards and pout are the top baits. Whiting and dab supposedly out-fish mackeral by 5 to 1!

Herring works. Chunks of freshwater eel are very popular in the Thames Estuary. I've caught tope on lamb's liver. Dunno which of us was more surprised, me or the shark!

If I think I am right in saying that you plan to fish the Swilly then mackerel wins hands down, flappers particularly. Had them pick up gurnard before but never take it properly. Andy Elliot is the man that will set you straight too.

Yep you're right, it's the Swilly I'm going to be hitting this spring/summer.
