Penn International v Senator 6/0

Mon Dec 18, 2006 11:43 pm

I have been using a penn senator 6/0 for my common skate fishing .The problem I have is a very jerky drag when the fish is running, I have wondered about investing in a penn international 2 speed can any one tell me which one to go for in size would the 30vsx be the same size as a 6/0

If the 30vsx is the same reel that I'm thinking off, it's prob a lot larger. Why not go for a nice 12 size International? Lovely reel.

hello Tanglerat , would the 12 not be on the small size ,Iwant to hold about 300 yds of 50 lbs braid.

the 12 takes 850yds of 12 lb mono, more than enough for 300 yards of 50lb mono and backing

whats up with the drag that it is jerky? is it set too tight for the fish ?

It has always been this way with a big running fish eg shark and skate. Big phil I have put new penn washers in and good oil on spindle
There is a company in America called Smoooth Drag (it has 3 os) I may give them a call it may solve my problem.
Happy new year everyone.............

The 12 would swallow 300 yds of 50lb braid, you'll need backing.

I used an Inntl 12 for wrecking years ago and it held over 300 yde of old style dacron; it was just too heavy and didn't have a level wind [ getting lazy in my old age ]
Getting back to your 6/0 I would suspect the problem is more likely to be ingress of oil/grease/water into the drag washers. Strip the drag, check the metal washers are completely flat, and give them a rub with very fine wet and dry paper or an abrasive polish like Brasso . Soak the felt washers in meths and dry out [ or, better still, buy new ones, and rebuild.
One last point, tighten down the drag when rinsing in fresh water after a trip, and then slacken off when dried.
