Tope Trace

Wed Jul 26, 2006 11:08 am

Not much experience fishing for tope, was broken a few times on 30lb line had a long wire trace as well. The line felt like it had been rubbed with sand paper what should i be using. Thanks.

Jack.

A few feet of 100lb mono to act as a rubbing leader to your wire trace should see you right.

I use 80lb Sakuma. Make sure you use it on your rig bodies as well.

I use a trace of about 3 or 4 feet of 200lb mono straight to the hook (no wire), but once the 20lb main line still got rubbed through (must of been spinning on the trace?), so now I'll often add 10 or 15 feet of 60lb between the main line and the trace.

I've started using 200lb mono straight through, prior to that it was a short wire trace with four or five feet of 100lb mono as a rubbing leader. I've never had them rub through the mono but then again I haven't caught a huge number.

i normally use 150 - 200lb trace, hooklength and rubbing leader, rarely any problems, in fact never!
sometimes i do use wire hooklength on an 80lb body and rubbing leader

dead on joe!!!! that sambuca was gorgeous in scotland....wasnt it!!!

back to the serious business though, you can add to your chances and the scent trail by tying off 2 droppers on your flowing trace to, this will give you 3 big baits on the bottom for your tope, although you have to strike fairly quickly to stop the fish from working its way up the trace taking all the baits!!

Bl**dy Hell Phil. do that over here and you'll end up with 2-3 tope.

sent down a 2 hook rig last time out for huss and had 3 drops in a row with a double hook up of tope. all fish in the 30-40lb range. had to cut the rig after that as my back and arms were killing me. :D

seriously for tope. i use a shockleader of 15 feet of 60lb. then my rig which is 3-4 feet of 200lb long liners nylon. never been bitten off yet but its best to check the area around the hook after every fish for wear.
