Check your boats

Wed Sep 19, 2012 10:52 am

Took the boat out for a spin tomorrow and was shocked to see my back up mooring line had come off the tow point off the front of the boat. Bad weather obviously worked the clip free!
next to my boat there is a sunk boat, small yacht I think.
My mooring is in aghada...
With the bad weather its been a few weeks since I was on the boat but I will definitely be checking out my boat a bit more frequently!

A wee bit ahead of yourself there.... :) ... but yeah, I've sometimes thought about trading over to a boat I can leave on the water and free myself from launch/retrieve hassles, but its just a different set of problems really. No easy answers either way.

ah.... yes... meant yesterday :)
Fishing was bad so last night beer replaced my lack of fish :) fuzzy head now!

I like mooring and you can still launch and retrieve during winter. A lot of these issues can be controlled with some common sense... e.g. have 2 mooring lines and a lot of boats there only have 1... very little redundancy... My boat is self draining, with a cover. A lot of boats out there are not and rely on one small bilge pump and one small battery that could only keep bilge going for a few hours... no good really in a storm.
I am not certain, but I think the boat sunk due to its mooring line being too short e.g. when the wind was blowing hard the bow was maybe pulled under the waves?? Also the stern is floating above the waterline so there seems to be some air there so it does look like the bow was dragged down.

always launch and retrieve thesedays. Spent too much on a boat to leave it out of sight now I can just pop outside and see if it's still there (way too many sleepless nights wondering if it's ok on the water after heavy rain.) . Esp with all the outboard robberies that are happening nowadays i think it's worth the little bit of hassle putting it in and out of the water, plus no hull scraping or antifoul required. Engine is always flushed out afte use with fresh water so i don't get salt water deposits building up as what happens on moored boats.

having said all that, you were lucky you checked and had 2 lines on her.
