another fish to i/d please

Thu Aug 09, 2012 1:29 am

Caught in Sligo bay yesterday . It appeared to be nibbling a bit of weed or something on the propeller .Weight just over 3 Lb . Length ? -- the overall length of the knife is approx 11" or 28 cm .
Quick photo and released .
Could you please tell me what it is and whether they are at all common in the Sligo waters ?
Thanks .
ATB .

Many thanks for the quick replies . I thought I was the only insomniac on here !

Thanks also for the congrats but I'd better own up now and say I didn't hook it . The true story is almost stranger than if I had done .
A mate and I were drifting for pollack . He got a really firm tug and his rod bent over . At first it had felt like a fish , then it wouldn't move so we reckoned it was the bottom , then it was definitely a fish on . It was lively but not putting up a huge fight but knowing how decent pollack can be deceptive until they dive I got the landing net out .
Mate was bringing the fish in from about 50 ft and was looking for the flash of it when it would have been about half way up , to see if it really needed the net . What he saw was his line still stretched out back and down .... but a fish right there under his nose swimming around the prop blades . First thought was WTF , ......then maybe the line was tangled or something . I couldn't figure it out either so I handed him the landing net and he scooped out the Trigger without too much difficulty !
It certainly seemed in good condition , no blemishes and very strong ( hard to hold ) . It shot away as soon as it was back in the water .
So , there's a specimen out there , seemingly well North of where it should be , if anyone can catch it legitimately !
All the best .

ya its a trigger alrite,,,suited more way down south in the more warm tropical waters but just shows ya how far these guys are willing to travel and how times are changing when they are visiting the coolers waters of the north

they are more commonly caught off the irish south coast such as wexford.waterford

well done on getting a sligo one

And the killer blow....
I personally think triggers are by far the nicest eating fish in irish waters......
beats bass, pollock and cod by far.

Its so good in fact I know one bay in west cork where I travel every year to gets some :)

I have heard they are about in Cork harbour... but I've never seen one from my boat or from the shore. Guides say Roches point, but swimming or fishing, again, I've never seen one!

I found a trigger washed up on a north Donegal beach last summer. Great to see a live one caught, even if not hooked! 8)

it might be time to clean the underneath of the boat blowin  if the fish are starting to think its a floating reef  and fairplay to you on your honesty. a lot would have claimed they caught it

defo a trigger fish, well done, not many to have claimed catching them :D
we get the very odd one on the north coast here but there would be reasonable quantities on the south coast. can only imagine numbers of them on the west coast being somewhere in between..?
plenty of info on-line about them if you would like to know more...

Oh shite , that means I owe my mate a large bag of chips . He thought it might be a tasty John Dory . I said it definitely wasn't and if I'd deprived him of a meal I'd buy him another one !
( It's ok , we've never even seen a Trigger up here over the past 8 years so would have returned it anyway  )
ATB and thanks again for all the comments  .
