Gents,
Another tackle related question, has anyone used the Avet range of reels at all? See them tested in Sea Angler this month to rave reviews. I went to a fishing shop in New York this week as over there with work and the guy told me they are sold out, apparently the best thing since sliced bread according to him and a very reasnoble price too for what you get (Made in US to very high standards)? All one peice aluminum lever drags and the option of 2 speed reels as well.
Any body got an SX or an LX i'd be interested in what you thought. I see them in the UK from Rokmax at 129 quid or on the internet in the states for 155 dollers which includes free line?
Any info appreciated.
Cheers.

Heh heh heh. The Avet range, eh? I remember long interesting debates on these reels on a different forum. Ahhh, happy memories.
Consensus was: looks interesting, good US internet forums users reviews, some word-of-mouth not so good things re corrosion from friends of friends using them in the States.
I've got one, the SX. since you're in Derry/Donegal, you want to have a look-see? pm me a contact no, we'll arrange a meet.
I haven't used it much, mainly cos I havent been fishing as much as I hoped this summer. Only used it once, I think, without braid. (Been meaning to load it with 14lb Fireline).
Freespool is astounding on it, absolutely amazing. Gotta be seen to be believed. Lovely little reel for lightline work.
As far as durability goes, I dunno. Haven't yet given it a season or two's hard work to see how it does.
Still, I like it. 8)

Tanglerat,
Thanks for the offer but unfortunatly I am stuck at work at the moment, over and back Southampton to New York on the QM2 and hence no where near Donegal again until December 20th.
The reels really are getting good reviews in the states so was surprised about the corrosion concerns? I was planing to put the SX on a Tidecutter 12-20 as think would be a lovely light line outfit - I have the 975LD on the 20-30 but can't justify buying another of those at that price even though I love the reel. I'll have a play with one when get back to New York but for 85 quid you can't really go wrong?
Cheers

re corrosion: probably (probably!) eejits who don't look after their kit properly, leave it lying aboard, don't even rinse it off after a day out, never mind squirt a bit of oil into the innards....... as I said, I haven't had mine long nuff yet to see for myself.
£85? Great price for what you're getting. Go on, you know you deserve an early Xmas pressie.............. :)
I have my Avet mated with a North-Western 12lb rod, and it's perfectly balanced, so the 12-20 Tidecutter sounds spot on.
One thing, the reel I have has no rod clamp. I don't miss it, but some might. You can get an after sales mod, though, to replace the reel seat with one that incorporates a clamp.

Paul,
I got 2 direct from the factory in California last year, a friend of mine knows the 2 brothers who own Avet. I got the SX & MX in plain silver, two of the best looking reels I've ever seen. The company has been making reels for about 4 years, in the early days they had a few teething problems, like handles coming undone and minor glitches that any new manufacturer would have, all those things have been sorted for a good while now.
Some of the guys in the states have even magged them for beachcasting, like Tangle said, the free spool goes on for ever, the drags are ace, in a nutshell if you seen the reel on the shelf at twice the price you'd still think them good value, they leave a lot of big names standing.
For the price you cant go wrong, check some of the US mail order companies, they can manage better shipping cost to Ireland than some of the UK companies, I know a few would only charge about $40 to ship that reel, lot les than buying it in the UK.
Hope this helps.
Tom.
