Aghada slip renovation

Hi Lads,

Does anybody now if the slip at lower Aghada will be useable this weekend, I believe there has been some renovation work going on,

Should I contact the harbour master to see if he knows anything or have any of you got a number that I could phone before going there,

Hi jim, any chance of finding out the current daily charge for down here, the last time we used here we payed in the clubhouse (forget the cost) then when we came in a lad that lives nearby was wanting to charge us again

Could you tell me where about the tennis court is please, and do you know if its open on Sunday, also is there an area for me to park up the Van & trailer for a few hours while i go out to see how the lads are doing in this months comp,

I pay €75 a year for launching fees and with about 25 launches last year it's well worth the money

I think the charge is €10 for a daily launch; parking is available on the property.

Most lads park on the grass next to the slip. Just park in a way that you leave plenty of room for others.

Avoid parking in front of the pole with the water tap as most boat owners use it to wash down their boats, trailers and jeeps when they come in.

The Tennis Club is about 100mts beyond the pier

The gates are usually opened by 09:00

If you know where the pier is in Aghada then the Tennis club is only a 100 mts pass the pier it is surrounded by 10ft high palm trees

I've not used it myself but in a discussion last year I inquired with someone who uses it on and off and I think its a fiver to launch and a fiver to retrieve as advised by Donal.
I just wanted to lauch to put onto my mooring and thats where I found out they charge both ways...

Not sure if, like everything else, its more expensive this year however?

that clears things up for me, I was looking on Google earth for tennis courts right by the water and didn’t know that the slip was separate from the tennis club,

I later found a site to do with the club and tried to ring the number but it seems they only man the phone a couple of days each week so I sent them an email this afternoon to find out if it was possible for me to launch on Sunday… still waiting for a reply but I have faith

This is the extract from the Aghada Notice.

Mariners are advised of the following notice as received from Cork County Council.

“Cork County Council has started maintenance and upgrade works at Aghada Pier, work commenced on Monday 5th March 2012. As a consequence, there will be no access to Aghada Pier, commencing March 5th for a period of 8 weeks. Mooring holders are requested to make alternative arrangements as necessary over this period. Cork County Council apologises for any convenience caused”

You could also try George Butler in Marlogue ....
Not sure of the prices, but a friend uses his slip.

Thanks for taking the time to find that info and the port of cork link will come in useful in the future,

We went down Sunday with the intension of launching from the tennis club slip but the gate was closed, it was about 11am so we drove on to the slip that “Jim from Cork” mentioned,

I had to join a 18ft tow rope unto the boat strap to reach the water without putting the front wheels on the extraordinarily slippery growth on the slip,

Had just about enough towing line for the boat to touch the water while keeping my front wheels about 2 feet from the growth on what looked and felt like the none slip area… so I pulls on the hand brake as I stepped out of the van but before I got my leg on the ground I felt the van move down the slip a few inches then it stopped,

Had to use the carpets under the wheels for grip to get back up the slip… lesson learned,

I think with the hour going forward I must have messed my times up about the tides and must have been at the slip a lot closer to LW than I thought but everything worked out grand from then on….. Suppose I should say it worked out grand for me but my mate “Dulittle” spent another hour getting the trailer up the slip after one of the wheels slid over the side of the slip…. But that’s another story

I went to pick up my new boat in west cork over 4 weeks ago and the axle snapped not more than a mile into the journey home... still not sorted... and I'm only dying to get her on my mooring!!

Can you still leave tenders in aghada and access the water from the beach by the station?

Yes the gap in the wall to the left is still open so you can launch from the beach but the pier itself is fenced off and I cant remember seeing any tenders around but then again there was only a couple of boats moored out so people may have taken them home,

Looks like they have broke up the top layer of concrete on the slip, should be a nice job when finished, it has to be the best slip area I have come across… Petrol / tackle / and plenty of bits and bobs to help in case you forgot anything all sold at the pier - where else would you get it
