knot for making string of feathers ??

Tue Aug 09, 2011 1:21 am

I have spent hours googling to find how the commercial boys make up a string of feathers or lures .The knot I am looking for is the one which attaches the snood which has the hook on one end to the main trace of the string . No joy whatsoever .
I have even dismantled a commercial trace to try to work it out . The knot looks as if it were simple enough once undone but I cannot put it back together .
The snood is not tied to a stand-off loop . It does not involve cutting the main trace line as you would if using a blood/dropper loop . It is not a "water" or a "surgeons" knot .

Can anyone help , please ?
Many thanks .

Does this mean each dropper/snood is added to a main intact trace, and they arent tail ends of knots such as blood or water knot?

Til now I have only ever used blood or water knot to make up feather traces, would you rather not use that approach?

use this knot http://www.netknots.com/html/dropper_loop.html cut one end of the loop and attach your hook to it

Correct . No tail ends . The main trace is intact . The trace is incorporated into the knot ie the end of the snood is not just tied around it , so the snood can't slide under pressure .
I want to replace just one or two lures on an existing string . There is not enough trace line to tie a blood knot between the existing snoods .
The water knot would be fiddly because I would have to pass existing snoods and hooks thru the new knot . Hope that makes sense ! Cheers .

Thinking about it , this knot must be machine-tied since it is used in mass production . Perhaps that is why it doesn't appear in articles of general interest . Hopefully it also means that it isn't too complicated to tie once you know how . I will let you know if I ever find out .
Cheers .

Where you want to tie your feather or lure to the main line what to do is make a loop and tie it around your finer like if your tying a ballon. It will have a loop, in the loop tie your lure in here and then pull either end of the main line this will remove the loop and it will be just left as a knot. Continue this way until you have all the lures on that you want. Hope i explained that correctly.

Why do ppl answer threads, without readin the original post?

The guy stated that he wans't interested in the Water, surgons, Blood or dropper knot yet that is all that has been suggested

You did ! It is a neat solution . It is also a lot easier to tie than the one I spent so long looking for . That turned out to be the " Longliners Knot " which might be a little stronger but tends to leave kinks in light ( 10 lb b/s ) snoods unless you are careful ( and patient ! ) . Many thanks

Glad that did the trick for you, i have no idea what the knots are called or any of the ones i use are called. All i know is they work for me and thats that. I used that knot when i first started fishing and making my own rigs when i was 12/13yrs old.
