Fri Jul 29, 2011 12:24 pm

Hi Lads
Going with http://www.howth-boats.com/ tomorrow 5-9pm
Any suggestions on end tackle or species to be expected? Is it worth my while bringing rag or will mack do?

Thanks

Cormac

sorry for not getting back sooner internet was down.fresh macks are the only bait we use.have tried everything but the macks are the one with the best results squid being second.we normally fish single 7/0 uptider hook with a half fillet, steel trace. i also use a spoon about 3 ft away from the hook. have had huss, dogs, gurard and flats, as well as thornies 18 1/2lb
last year and one 10 1/2lb this year just let the skipper know what your looking for. most of the times they only have mackbashers on board. so it could depend on whats going out with you. dont forget to let us know how you get on. regards derek

Went out there on Sat. 5.30 to 9.30
Got on the mack at the start filled a box, moved onto a couplr of spots, over sand, couldnt seem to grip the ground and we were constantly drifting. 3 spots we tried. 10 of us not a bite.

Me and 2 of my buddies, there other 7 people were novices really.

Not a bite between us, not even a dogfish. I have never seen fishing as slow. Weather wasnt great, I got my first dose of the greens, probavly the hangover and the empty stomach.

We had crab, rag and fresh mack, not a nibble!

Was good craic anyway. Dave the skipper was a gtood laugh. We wanted to get in closer to the islands to try for pollock or wrasse but the swell was a bit much.

Heading out again for an evening sessiosn with them on the 14th

the charter has to look after everyone on board so he normally stays with the mackbashers .havent heard of anything else been caught with him  some clubs book him and he goes out to the kish or over to lambay but he will always play it safe with daytrippers and keep them on the macks.

Best way to fish for the pollock and wrasse at the back of the island is to 'Gill' for them using ragworm , basically a long flowing trace dropped bottom dropped and slowly retrieved. We have had rays , bull huss and tope from out on the banks before , they are most definitely their to be caught
