Lads,
A fairly simply question i guess. I have my boat over a year now and havent got around to putting her name on it. I'm just wondering what is the best paint and way of doing this? I just don't want to make a complete mess of it for the first time.

A lot of auto accessories shops can make the name for you similar to the way they do number plates.
Some would have computerised cutting machines so you could design your own Font and colour
It’s only a matter of sticking it on the boat.

m8 generate the name on PC to the actual size and style you want print out (x2) as tiled if bigger than A4 tape it together then cut stencil lightly spray mount the back and position on boat (do the same with for letter which have 2 or more part such as A B D e..etc!)...then use what ever colour of Car Spray you want (very lightly to avoid runs leave to dry and repeat x3) remove stencil and spary with clear varnish...yer done...

as above if you choose to go down the Vehicle Livery, Graphics route let them know its for a boat as the standard material degrades very quickly...and may need additional coating...best luck

If you go into a sign maker and ask them to design the name in what size and font you like and get them to cut it out of vinyl mask. This is a type of low stick vinyl that you apply to the surface and paint through it. They will explain to you how to use it anyway. Apply a bit of the paint to a piece of scrap plastic and when the paint on the plastic is sticky to touch, peel away the vinyl mask and you'll be left with the name, if you do it when the paint is still wet it can run a bit. The best type of paint for this would be "One Shot". You can get it in most good art suppliers. It's designed for sign painting and is more opaque than ordinary gloss and also is easier to apply with small brushes. Just make sure the paint isn't too thin when applying. The vinyl mask stencil shouldn't cost much either so it might be worth your while to get 2 for every one you need. Also you can't re use the stencil so if you are putting the name on both sides you'll need to get more stencils. Best of luck.

If it's a fibreglass hull you would normally just order up a Vinyl name. There are a few places that so it online. There is a place in Ashbourne that will do it as well. I think the web site is ashcoverup.ie or com. Can't remember exactly.
