Hi All,
I have been a shore angler the last 18 years , and have just bought a boat , i live in dublin but have a place in Cahore Co Wexford . i know all the spots from courtown beach to tinnabera beach.
If a launch from cahore pier, where do i go in need of, thornback ray , tope, smoothies cod e.t.c. What bait do i use , time of year and rigs, weather maps e.t.c. please if anyone could answer some of these i would be very grateful.
I have all the safety gear.
Could i go out in the next week or so weather permitting , jigging for cod, pollack?
Just can not wait to get out there!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Thanks a million and look forward to the responses.

Hi,
The boat is a 16ft bonwitco has two outboards, a 25 hp yamaha and a 4hp mariner ancillary engine.
Elecs from key and a steering wheel,
I have looked through the boating forum and doesnt say much about cahore except June to July, i was wondering about this time of year depth, rigs and bait.
I dont expect miracles nad i know it will take time , but if i were to go out tommorrow for instance , i wouldnt know exactly what to do fishing wise.
I know all my rigs, baits ,distance, weather, venues for each species and so on for shore fishing.
I have all the safety electronics, jackets e.t.c.
Anything id be grateful for.
Best of luck
Cian

Well done Cian on your new boat. i had a bonwitco some years back and found the to be a fine craft. If my memory serves me well, the gunnel's are quite low, so i would suggest that when under power you clip the emergency stop to your cloths. And definitely on your maiden launch have another craft with you and in the water before you launch. And as Jim suggests, local knowledge cant be beaten. Happy hunting

Good luck!
Don't know those waters, but leave the fishing gear behind on the first few trips...
Get a feel for the boat, and the new waters as there will be many hazards.
Get a local to go with you and show you things to watch out for, currents, sandbanks, wrecks etc...
I'll third the no substitute for local knowledge

Hi Cian and welcome. The problem your up against is that fewer guys boat fish in the winter months and where you might get a lot of response in summer you might have to find your own way in the winter.
If memory serves me right there is an unmarked rock as you come out of Cahore over to your left as you look out to sea so stick to the pier side going in and out.
Fished a few boat comps down there years ago and a lot of guys fished out off Rooney point for ray etc.
Haven't fished it from my own boat so sorry I can't be of more help.
You got good advise about trying to have the company of other boats on first trip.
I know Stella Maris SAC run a 2 day comp there every year in summer they might be worth contacting.
Good luck whenever you get out and play safe.

Hi Yappo
Thanks, it is definetely a very good idea to ask another boat out , i know a local guy from a few years ago, used to fish the beaches there with him for bass and smothies,Ill ask him.
I know of those shallow rock marks as growing up there every summer on the pier i seen so many accidents with boats and jet skis hitting them.
I know , off roney point for the rays but how far , what depth and so on i really dont know where to drop the line, also you must anchor for them???
Thinking of setting out next sunday and having a blast, fish wont be biting on those rods in the garage

, time to get them wet.
So a bit of luck and the weather on our side ill have a few photos to show????????????
Best of luck and thanks for the info
Cian

Hi cian sent you a pm
i would not advise going alone for the first few times at least bring someone with you that knows about boating, a company boat is always nice to have

this area has serious tidal runs, and extreme care should be taking avoid here if the wind has an east in it,wind against tide here can turn from millpond conditions to churning seas in the matter of minutes, trust me i know we ended up in a f5-6 NE that came out of the blue against tide a few years back

as for the fishing you dont have to head out of sight, you will be surprised how close in the fish are
good luck with your new boat and be safe, if it does not feel safe generally it is not safe

use your instinct and dont let anyone change your mind no matter how good the fishing is.

hi cian, welcome to the boat hub,i fish cahore a couple of times a year, its not a nice place to be when it blows up,although all the species you mentioned can be caught there, the slip way can be dangerous with the wrong tide and wind as there is an arch where the sea runs through at the bottom of the slip, during the stella comps i have seen the rnli help retrieve boats there,as the others have said, its best go on spec on a good day first and maybe join in with others,it will alll come to you with practice,eddie...........
