Thornback baits that don't attract the doggies?

We were trying to target Thornbacks last weekend but were smothered in dogfish. We were using crab and mackerel as bait. We got to the stage where we were using half a mackerel as bait and the dogfish would get his mouth around the mackerel and swallow it up as far as the hook, we were lifting them out of the water with them stuck on the bait even though they weren't hooked???
When I did pick up a thornie the other hook on the rig had a dog attached.

Has anybody any tips for even holding them at bay???

Also does rubby work for thornies or is it likely to just bring on more dogs?? (we weren't using r dubby last weekend)

i dunno if it's of any use to you, but sure i might as well post it. a mate of mine tried ground baiting from the shore a few times. pay a visit at low water, dig a few shallow holes, and fill with bits of mackeral and god knows what else. anyway, he let the tide come in, and came back and cast out the required distance to the holes, he was driven demented bt dogs, packed up the gear, and moved 150- 200 yards up the shore, and hey presto not a doggie to be seen, they all seemer totally preoccupied with the freebies further down. but he still picked up ray on the new mark. i know it seems like a lot of work, but it might be something that could work in a boat. sure tis some thing to muse over anyway.

i've said it before but it is worth repeating....you will not get doggies on spinners the down side is that you won't catch thornies either but hey! it solves 50% of the problem.
