Can anyone explain the main advantage of a running ledger tube boom for boat fishing?
I have seen anglers using them but never really knew the benefit over an ordinary zip slider boom.
I am considering a pack of these to give them a go and see what the fuss is about :

Thanks

Tend to be more tangle free than the shorter zip sliders etc.
Easy to make your own in lengths to suit.

The big man is spot on ...
Worth thinking about not only the length of the tube but the internal diameter of the tube in comparison to the line your likely to use ... if the diameter to too big in comparison to the line diameter your using, sand/grit can enter into the tube and rub the line, so try matching the internal tube diameter to the line diameter, so there isn't excessive clearance ...

Nice advice guys. When using braid are you better to attach a length of mono for the boom to slide along or can it just go straight onto the braid?

Make the sliding boom up with mono, I use 50lb B/S mono, but you can use different breaking strains depending on as mentioned the inner diameter of the tube, again depending what your fishing for ... experiment and see what works for you in the waters your fishing.
I buy the tubes straight and heat them then bend them myself, not forgetting to put the swivel on and the weight link, save you some cash in the long run, I make up 30 or so a time.
They are excellent for most types of fishing, uptiding they are a must ... tightlines

Hello,
I've seen the subject a while ago and I like to add another type of boom used in Holland .Its a metal tube already bent in the right
position.I use these boom to fish for sole in combination with a two hook ledger ,very small hooks size 6/8.Its works also, while drifting, with a 60/90 cm line from a swivel in deep water and sandy bottoms.I caught plenty lemon sole while fishing on the drift from Courtmacsherry, tired of waiting the for one blue shark which was also mine, the other guys from Dublin <sorry folks, were seasick or at least a little green around the gills ! The main line feeds trough the tube.De diameter is not very wide.I never had any sand or mud into the tube, because if you fish a tight line the end part is not on the bottom except for heavy bottom fishing on anchor.Of course you can feed a thicker part of mono through the tube and let it slide between two swivels. The type of boom is called Garay boom in Holland ,named after Iwan Garay,a writer of a few angling books, and a keen boat angler. He also invented a floates specially for Garfish with a built in weight to get distances up to 80-100 meters .If you don't have to throw the plastic booms will do,but gets sort of a beating while fishing deep spots and heavy fish.If you go for heavier stuff try to get some metal ones ??! I think they can be had from several dutch tackle shops .also available in Belgium.
Tight lines and the best for 2011
