Hi i am planning to buy my first boat for some pleasure angling next year, i am wondering what i would get for €4000 -€5000, and what would be a good safe first boat for close to shore angling, thanks in advance all advice welcome.

With out a shadow of doubt get an Orkney longliner with a 6-10hp engine (no bigger). With 4-5k you will get a package on a trailer no problem.

depends on what you want. theres a good selection for the money you are holding do you want to fish sitting? or do want to be able to walk and stand up fishing

You could get your self a Strikeliner 16 with engine and trailer for your budget longliners are OK as well but a lot of people who buy them first find out they want a bit more speed.

I would second the strikeliner recommendation as you will get more out of them then a longliner. You should get a decent one with a 25-30hp for 5k. If you happen to be from the Dublin area fell free to come and check mine out to get an idea of what they are like.
there is a nice one on donedeal that you would probably get for 5k

If you not venturing far from shore, consider displacement boats in the 15 to 19 foot range. If you're trailering it every time you go fishing, then perhaps the smaller end of the scale might be better especially if you're going on your own. The slow displacement boats will need less horse-power to drive and will be cheaper to maintain and run.
15 Foot Super Sar from O'Sullivans Marine
16 Foot Orkneys as already mentioned
17 Foot Skellig 17 from O'Sullivans again.
17 Foot or 19 Foot Lee Fisher
The above are mainstream models. There are other less popular models.
Make sure you get a good engine and trailer.
Cuddys are worth having. I'm a big fan of some shelter in a boat.

Jez you'll get a lot of bang for buck for that price range, all the prices have dropped now, my boat in the avatar was going for 4k a few weeks ago and its dropped to 3k now. Grab a bargin online quick before people decide to take it off the market till next season (what I'm considering

)

Wilson Flyer is also in your price bracket -
Depends what you want - there are two types of boat for that price range IMHO -
Slow fisher - 8-10hp
Fast Fisher - 30hp +
I had a twin 30hp 17ft Wilson flyer and would recommend them - solid build and 25-30 knots gets you fishing quicker.
