Bass Question

Thu Sep 16, 2010 9:07 pm

Even though I am a seasoned boat angler I am new to bass fishing simply because they were so scarce up to now.

Last week I spent many hours over 4 tides, 2ebbs 2 floods ,lure fishing at a very popular mark in West Cork.

I was using plugs, sand eels and spinners.

Result hooked and lost 1 fish.

Bass were jumping like salmon all around me  and I couldn't catch any  .

What was I doing wrong?Any advice appreciated.

To see bass jump clear of the water is rare enough, but it can happen. It usually happens during a bass bust, when the fish are in a feeding frenzy. You're more likely to see the surface being thrashed a good bit and during that activity one or two fish might clear the water. I've seen it a few times but not often. You're more likely to see a mullet jump or seatrout. Just my tuppence.

Never seen a bass jump myself in decades of fishing for them. Seen (and still see) lots of sea trout hopping out at bass marks, that'd be my first suspicion as to what they were.
