Have an Evinrude 70 HP outboard engine. It wasn't used for a year/two when I bought it but it had been serviced before it's no use period. I had a marine mechanic give it a look over after I purchased it and it was ok.
It starts no problem and runs on quater to full throttle perfectly.
However when out after having in the engine off (even for a minute or two) it can give trouble restarting, especially if you dont get it to a high enough rev quickly. While slightly annoying this is not too big a concern.
The major problem I'm having with it is I've been out three times and everytime when returning to the slip as I approach I have to let the engine down to a low rev to go slow enough to the slip and it cuts out. Start it up cuts out again. This leaves me edging to the slip/rocks with no power. Not good.
To me it seems the point where the engine gets enough bite to keep it ticking over and not conking out, it has too much power and I'm going too quick. I want it at a lower speed but the engine conks out then.
Any ideas? Is it me or the engine. Personally I don't think its me but I'm no expert.

It's not you. Get it looked at by a competent marine mechanic, could be something like crud in the idle control valve.

Agree its not you

If all the fuel in the carb was not drained off totally before lay-up, it evaporates over time and leaves behind gummy crud as mentioned above. Simple cleaning job for a mechanic.

Yeah I would clean out the carbs and maybe look at increasing the idle speed a little. Maybe new sparks too?
