i recently got one of the new "yellow pack" 175 warrior wondering whats the recommend
anchoring gear?
would i be right to use a 5kg bruce and 200m of 10mm polypropelene pot
rope?
whats the best way to rig a buoy to pull the anchor? akayanka? what buoy.
i plan to anchor a bit on the beal bar with ferociously strong tides up to 7 8 knots a times
about 20 meters deep

Hey John,
Have you had her out yet? Congrats on the new Boat Again.
I'm sure Jim will be in on this one soon. You might get away with a 5kg Anchor, but I think most of the guys in a 175 us 7.5kg

I know BigKev anchors the Beal with a 2.5 or 3kg Bruce (Predator 165), but he does use quite a bit of Chain. About 25 feet of 6mm.... if I remember correctly.
With the 175 & a 5kg Bruce, I would guess you would also need about 20 - 25 feet of 8mm Chain to hold properly on the Beal... I've use this setup and can anchor on the Turbot Bank without too much hassle, but I have a lighter setup. Come to think of It I think Jim done a bit of fishing on the Beal bar a couple of years back. He'll put you right as soon as he sees this. For the moment I'm curious how wrong my specualtion is
Tight Lines,
Kev

I suppose it’s all down to what works for you… if you know what I mean!
I have a 7kg Plough anchor attached to 12-14’ of 10mm heavy close linked chain. Works fine so far in all situations I have found myself in (I keep a fold up on board in case it hits the fan). I use this anchor for all ground. I reckon a 5kg would do fine as well – there probably would be little difference. The 7kg + chain is quite heavy!
The poly rope will do fine except for: If you are using a buoy to retrieve from deep water the poly rope will unravel itself over time as the anchor spins on the way up. The poly rope does not compact well in the anchor locker so you might struggle to get 200m plus anchor & chain in there. It will do fine for now but keep an eye out for some cheap braided rope. I have something like 220m 8mm + chain and anchor in my locker without a bother.
As for retrieval: I have a stainless ring on the rope. When paying out rope I hold onto the ring. If I want to use the buoy I clip the buoy to the ring and away I go. When not in use the buoy is kept on the outside of the transom. A polyform A3 or equivalent buoy does the business and can be passed through the cuddy hatch if necessary (you’ll get the dimensions online). An Anka Yanka would be grand too.

thanks for that valuable advice. i will try and get a coil of braided rope.
i could hold my previous boat, 3.5 tons, easily with a 10kg bruce
even in strong tide which made me thing 5kg might be ok.
when i anchored on sand i used to leave off the chain altogether
and she still held fine

something like
this, it's only 100m but you might get 2 reels spliced together if needed.

hi jw well done on your new boat i have a warrior 175 with a bruce 7.5 kg anchor 18 ft of 8 mm and 250 mts of 8mm polyrope i have anchored in 330 ft of water no problems

Well done on joining the Warrior owners club Jw, what did you do with the Osprey ??
I will go with the others on their choice, I use a 7.5kg bruce, and she holds on the turbot bank in Cork Harbour in a 4.4mt tide like someone pulled up the handbrake. I use 25' of 8mm chain which is most important, but I use nylon rope, I hate polyprop... nasty stuff.
I would prob have got a 5kg Bruce but the 7.5 came with the boat, I have a buddy who uses the 5kg version for his Avor 250 and will hold no problem in the same tide on the turbot bank so the 5kg with enough 8mm chain will hold a Warrior anywhere.
Well wear with the boat.

welcome to the warrior club,i have a very similar set up to styerman and find it very good,a little practice is all you need and the 7.5 kg should hold you anywhere, make sure you set your anchor to trip, saves looseing them, and carefull when retreveing the anchor the first few times if useing the anka yanka system,eddie.........

I would go with the 5kg John looking at the posts. Try to go lighter to make it easier to handle. As mentioned on the phone you'll be able to see and also "buoy up" a bit better working out of a 175 compared to the Osprey, but still to get used to it in some calm seas and light tide just to get a handle of the new Bus.

thanks for the advice on this. in the end i opted for a 7.5 kg imitiation bruce. When i
got home i weighed it and its only 6.81kg. those chinese boys don't miss a trick

also bought about 15 feet of 10mm chain which weighed in at 11.35 kg, might cut
a bit off that, also got a 200m coil of 8mm braided. I was thinking of incorporating a swivel
in the setup but it will probably be ok without it
