Supposed to be bad luck, the way around it is to get a sticker or plaque with the old boat name on it, and place it somewhere on the boat before you rename her, that way you avoid the bad luck.

It's just Superstition

Most ships and commercial fishing boats have changed names several times so don't worry about it :)

yes a lot of boats get renamed but i think you will find all the skippers have the old name in the wheelhouse hell who are we to question old maritime laws and traditions. its also bad luck to have uneven numbers on board or have a black pregnant seahag up on deck. killing a porpoise or dolphin is a big no no i often wonder how the tuna netters get away with it also watch out for mermaids they often give very bad directions as to the safest way home the list goes on .my father[who is very religious] insisted on blessing my boat when i got it. as you never no what heathen owned it before me he said lol

yes paul should have all my paint together this weekend .work all next week to have her ship shape. dident realise how much damage to the paintwork was done by the boat next to me on the mooring. when his boat hit me it took chunks out of it. have to fit seating in the cabin as no one will be able to stand at the back with the new engine as they will get soaked.it will also reduce the sand ballast im useing. so im looking forward to abit of work but hell its worth it

Not always. In the United States and most of Europe ships are regarded as female, while Russian ships were considered male.
However, some would hold that it's because:

1) they're horrendously expensive to obtain and run
2) maintenance is an ongoing problem
3) they seldom do what you expect
4) they require constant attention
5) they tend to take their men down with them.

 sorry . . .

One I do find interesting; when they named a ship after a woman and they felt it was bad luck to have a woman aboard.
