Hi,
I have been boat fishing for about 10 summers or so and I have accumulated a number of reels and rods. I generally use a Penn International 16 and it serves me well. However, last season I used my mates lighter gear while fishing for pollock and loved the fight and the extra sport involved in landing it so now Im looking for a small boat reel for the job. I looked at the fishing magazines and the web sites but you know yourself every reel they sell is “the best reel in the world” and is capable of pulling in moby dick himself. I was looking towards the abu black seven as it is reasonably cheap and I want to keep it under the ton if I can. Has anyone any suggestions??????
Thanks.

I have heard the new abu seven series is absolute crap, they are far east made and not Sweeden. If you can stretch to a Diawa saltist 20 or 30 or a diawa slosh 20 or 30. I know the saltist is a bit more than you want to spend but it a cracking reel and will last a lot longer than the new abu seven.

If you want it for pollack fishing etc you will not do better than a 2nd hand Shimano tld 5 or 10, if you can get your hands on one, if not a new Shimano charter special 1000ld or 2000ld loaded with 20lb braid is the way to go, it has a lever drag which you are used to.

Good call.
Try sourcing them on ebay. If you can't find one, consider a tld15. Bit beefer, but a good all-rounder and they're still available new..
