Plaice from deep water

Mon Sep 14, 2009 3:37 pm

Lads,

I have been given a mark that is said to hold Plaice but it is very deep (20-30m). Using spoons etc and drifting is fine in shallow water. Has anyone experience and advice on targeting flats in water this deep?

Thanks

Caz

20-30m = Deep – you should come down this way for a bit!!!!!!! :D
You will be able to use your normal tactics – no bother. I would say that you should use braid mainline – better feel. Many will use a 2 or 3 hook leger, spreader bars are also popular. Depending on speed of drift 4 to 6 oz of lead should do fine.

Nothing like a good plaice and where there's plaice there cold be turbot, brill etc....nice!

Have you considered fishing it at anchor?

I havent actually. I thought you had to be moving to have the best chance for Plaice???? What would your choice of bait be for Plaice in deep water??

All depending on depth of water, wind direction, tide strength and direction, but - anchor up tide of the mark, and "trot" your bait back downtide through the mark. Not so much weight that it's anchored on the bottom, not so little that it's kiting in the tide, just enough to keep you in contact as you lift the rod tip and release a yard or two of line at a time.

Very enjoyable way to fish. Nice and relaxed.

There are lots of variables to consider in it though, you'll probable find yourself repositioning the boat as the tide eases/changes direction etc. Especially if it a small, tight mark.

Worthwhile trying an uptider as well as trotting back.

For plaice I'd be looking at lug/rag/squid/mackeral, depending on location/experience.

Thanks for that. I will certainly give that method a try. Sounds interesting.
