Dodgy Braid

I bought a spool of the same make braid a few years ago, spooled it up and exactly the same thing happened to me when stuck into a shark.
Needless to say I never used it again.

For that reason I only ever use mono fishing for tope/sharks. 25lb is fine but I respool the
reel regularly

iv heard of it happening with power pro before
seemingly its a brand that suffers with counterfeiting.

I still like power pro, one reel I have was loaded with it 8 seasons ago and is still going strong, I did have a similar thing happen a couple of months ago though with it, luckily that was while connected to the fence in the garden testing for any problems, I put that down to some bad casting the previous trips where I whacked out the bait and it all came to an abrupt stop with a slight birdsnest in the braid, I remember doing a good few shite casts like that and thinking how the hell it didn't part at the time, anything come to mind Kev??
I did get some 20lb berkley whiplash pro crystal off a guy on ebay the other week £15, nice stuff.

I've heard of the counterfit stuff before. I think that was an issue with bulk spools. This was an original spoll. 300Yards. I've had this happen once before with Powerpro. Some 20lb broke before about 6 years ago when spinning for Pike. Same issue. I think it's got to be dodgy spool...... Wierd, and really sucks after yo loose a fish like that one..... I have several spools that have been going for ages so I'm inclined to leave them as is. I think I buy some new whiplash as a replacement. For the moment, it's back to the pink stuff.

I still think you are putting yourself at a huge disadvantage using braid. A 35lb tope is a
strong powerful fish and when he makes a sudden movement or lunge for freedom before
the drag can react a shock is applied to the knot or weakest point of the braid and it often
breaks there. With the stretchyness of mono it cushions this sudden shock and allows the drag
time to get moving. There's no advantage to braid for this type of fishing, its not like you need
sensitive bite detection when a tope picks up your bait and swims off, the ratchet will start screeming.
I reckon about half the tope I see hook up on the charters I've been on are lost, and a lot of it
is due to braid parting so I always use mono as I want my tackle working with me not against me
.
