Help with Buying 1st boat

Hi Guys,

I am a keen shore fisherman and have recently been considering buying a boat. I dont know where to begin and after reading so many

threads here I think Im more confused than when I started!!

What I want is a 2nd hand/used boat...something with a cuddy (herself's only request!!!).....2 pilot/helm seats and maybe some seating at rear of boat. I plan to use the boat for fishing but also for the odd little trip....this is why I need two comfortable seats.

My budget is not much....6000-6500.

Is it possible to get a boat like what I want for this price? Ive looked at donedeal and appolloduck for ideas but cant see what I want for that price range.

Any help no matter how small would be greatly appreciated.

Newbie, take a look at www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk. Something from the Seahog stable should suit your needs nicely. Had a Sea Jeep myself and loved it. You might have to pop across the water to pick it up but even allowing say 500 quid to go and get it you will still get a lot more bang for your buck.

Hi, if you dont feel the need for speed, look at the smaller orkney boats, or an alaska 500.

Would it be a wiser move to go along the lines of buying just boat and trailer and buying a new engine or go for one of the "all in" deal offers?

Also am I right in saying there is no tax or duty to be paid seeing as it is a used boat?

No tax or duty If you can get one with low hours, go for it, if not then you may well be better off with a boat and trailer deal and buy your own new engine if your budget will stretch to that.

The excitement has worn off....I am a bit disillusioned now with the variety of boats to be found....also my budget doesnt seem to be strrrrrrrreeeeeetching as far as I anticipated

I will keep looking but I think Ill have to keep saving at the same time...



A few more questions....

How old a boat do I buy? Does it really matter? How negotiable do asking prices be?

I know how you feel dude I just got my first boat a couple of weeks ago from a guy near Waterford… had a list of five boats to check but when I met Jim from Cappoquin “I think that’s how its spelt.. it’s on the Limerick side of Waterford”

You should have a chat with him and tell him your needs as he does great deals and will let you know if anything is coming his way that will fit your plans / needs… he’s the type of bloke that will arrange to take you out in the boat and is very helpful when it come to marks for fishing around the area as he does a fair bit himself,

You can be sure when I come to looking for another boat he will be first on my list to check,

i wouldnt worry too much about the age once the boat is clean and sound and not decrepid. The quality of the engine is paramount too.

I have a strikeliner and have to say i am very happy with it, they are very stable and seaworthy, not too heavy, easy enough to launch and good value. Towable with a saloon too.

the one in your add looks a good example and seems very clean, the engine looks good too. Plenty of extras too so you would be ready to go. The only thing that bothers me about that boat is that there are no grab handles or grab rails but they are a very easy addition. With that engine you would be getting toward 18-20 knots or so max with a light load. That kind of speed is plenty for us.

I would offer 6500 or even push 6250 and see how you go, as the boat has no aux engine you will need to factor one into your budget too dont forget, maybe you could deal with the seller here as he is an orkney dealer. for that package i would be willing to go 6750 or so.

The first ad is definatly a strikeliner but I would have grave reservations about the second ad. I think the second is a longliner, regardless of the label on the side of the boat. Look at the two pictures in comparison. Strikeliner will plane, longliner will not. Its still a great boat though. Just be sure you know what your buying.

The second one is a fastliner, they would not be as fast as a strikeliner alright.
