Hey all,
I participated in this comp last year with Petekd. I have to say it is a cracking comp that is very well run and as Rob mentioned has many many prizes that everyone can aim for. It's not all just about top species count, although that's the primary objective. Because of this, the comp can be as serious as you like. There will be the usual boats all trying for as many species as possible on marks that have been learned over the years. If you like your small boat angling, after a practice trip or 2 you could be looking at 10 - 12+ species for the duration for the comps which will put you close to mid table. It takes a few years of knowledge to break into the top 10 but excellent fishing can be had for all boats. There are also many big fish prizes which hopefully will see your crew called to the prize table, if you stick to a single species or two and try for that bigger fish.
Even with this being a very competive comp the comradarie is excellent with all competitors sharing a soft drink

or ten

in Rosies bar after each day. There were a couple of days last year where there was a bit of a chop on the slip. It was truely fantastic to see 8 guys there waiting to hold your boat while you got the trailer to the slip and were ready to pull her out of the water. Fantastic Comraderie that really left a lasting impression with me.
If your thinking about it..... go for it. The event itself is cracking and if anything it will give you a great excuse to fish Cork Harbour a few times during the year. The Harbour itself offers some excellent fishing, even in tough weather. My suggestion would be for a couple of new boats to pair up. Share your marks and practice together. This way you can divide and conquer, and hopefully move both boats that little bit closer to the top.
Give it some though guys, you might be surprised just how much you enjoy it. If you have any questions regarding the comp, ask away.
