Finally Got an Orkney Strikeliner 16+

It has a 30hp tohatsu 4 stroke engine.

Was wondering if anyone new the capabilities of the boat, what would be the max sea you would venture out on with the boat on Beaufort wind force scale?

The skrikeliner is a great boat,it fishes 2-3 men no bother.wind wise i wouldnt go out in more than force 5-6.with the 30 on it you should hit around 25mph in calm seas.we had one for 4 years and had some big fish on her tope ray and conger,so best of luck with her and hope you catch many fish

The strikeliner is a semi-displacement hull. Speed up it will plane, slow down it will dig in. It is a capable boat. Sea conditions have as much to do with the skipper as the boat, if you know what I mean. Most will venture out only in seas that they are comfortable in. Experience tends to dictate. The boat will probably take more abuse than you can. You will stain your underpants quicker than the boat will be under pressure.

Wind direction has as much bearing as wind speed as does tidal state. In areas a slight breeze blowing against a strong tide can create ferocious seas. An offshore breeze can make inshore conditions pleasant whereas the same strength breeze blowing onshore can make it unfishable.

The forecast/conditions dictate whether you go or not, often the forecast is wrong and despite having lots of prep done you have to put tail between legs and go home. The smarter skipper knows when to turn tail.
Fishing in poor conditions is not fun. Drift can be too fast. Anchoring can be uncomfortable or the boat may swing. Bite detection can be poor.

We had an Orkney Strikeliner for years before we moved up to the Warrior. It was a great boat and we were out in some very hairy conditions in it many times. I reckon we got up nearly 30 mph with a Yamaha 30hp 4 stroke in calm conditions but in big seas it rides the waves nicely when going slow. force 4 no bother at all. We regularly went out to the offshore banks off Dublin like the Kish Bank. In my opinion it is one of the best all-round small boats. It punches away above its weight.

yeah it is a great wee boat, love going over the big swells in it. I quite like the look of those warriors, especially the 175, that could be my next boat in a year or two, that or a orkney pilothouse 20 or day angler. Hows it going?
