Penn 220 CS & GTO level wind

Wed Jun 03, 2009 2:28 pm

Have been looking at the Penn 220, and to be honest its a bit confusing, with various on-line shops giving conflicting info. Some are saying that the 220 GTO has level wind, but the CS doesnt and are charging £10 more for the GTO version, while others are advertising them both as having level wind and are charging the same price for both, the more expensive price i might add.

My first question is what the fek is level wind? & secondly is it worth paying £10 extra for?

Paddy, a level wind is the chappie that goes from side to side laying your line on the reel as you retrieve. I prefer a reel without myself but that's just me and the nature of the fishing I do. If you like flicking light leads away from the boat then you could be better off without. It is also another area for maintainence.
If you are thinking a reel to combine with the Anga/mustad multi tip consider something like 525 or 535 Penn, basically a reel in the 6000 - 7000 class.

I have a Mitchell 624 which works absolutely perfect, would this be similar in class to the penn 525?

Tbh there was a guy on the boat outa rathmullen on Sunday that got his line into an awful birds nest, and he spent the guts of an hours fishing time trying to sort it out, so Im really just looking for a cheap backup reel, to avoid a whole hand'lin like that!

Looked at pictures of a 624 online, couldn't get detail of the ratio. I think it would be a far bigger reel. Most reels in the 6 -7 class are fairly high speed with ratios of 5:1 or more. Many of the older reels had lower ratios like 3:1. The faster reels are great for shadding etc. You will haul big fish on a 525 or 535 or suchlike.

That said if the reel is only for backup then how bad! It will do fine!

As you said earlier you want to scale down. You will find that when you fit the reel to the new rod you will want a smaller reel. Keep an eye out for offers and ask Santa nicely for an Avet SX :D :D

Bought a new 525 mag extra for £70 last night on ebay. Hopefully I'll have both rod and reel before my next trip out!

Good choice reel that can be used striaght down for shadding and such, but you can easily cast rigs away from the boat as well. If you see Rob McClean recent bost report from Greystones all the Wrasse we caught flicking 2oz leads and bait away from the boat tight to features.

Guys, thanks a million for the reel recommendation, I was out on Sunday, and had the Penn 525 paired with the anaga, the set-up handled perfectly, and I could believe the difference the 6:1 gear ratio made to the time taken to reel up, compared with the old Mitchell 624.
