Dogfish Slaughtered on Angling Trips

Fri Feb 27, 2009 9:07 pm

Seen the other post on dogfish being slaughtered by fishermen making their living out at sea but how about the angling boats for hire as day trippers like ourselves who would hire a boat for a days fishing.
These people are also guilty of over killing dogfish aboard their own vessels for use as bait for skate, I have seen buckets of these fish tossed over at the end of sessions for this reason.

In fairness mate as far as I know its only a couple of boats based in the North that do that, Never seen it done on any charters I've been on,

never did it but to target certain fish you need certain bait.
i use mack, squid, rag, lug, mussel etc, these too are surely
being harvested excessively or deffo not being managed.
every fishing trip will require bait of some sort.
i still want to fish for many years and catch doggies/mack etc
and dig a few worms so any tips,,,,?

use quiet a few boats in the clew bay area, also killala, belmullet, never have i seen a charter boat owner kill a doggie, unless a angler wants to bring one home, even then the owner tried to change the anglers mind. All the charter boat owners i know tend to be very conservation minded and look at the long term view rather than short term gain.

there is one boat up here where the skipper is only too well known for such pratices. all the dogs and large whiting who eat his baits laid out for so called specimens get a knife to the head and chucked overboard as he referes to them as the rats of the sea. he's also very well known for targeting doggies, cutting their tails off (without a knock to the head) and chucking them over to bleed to death on the sea bed to put out a blood trail for skate. a few people have had run in's with him in the past over this, but it still goes on. if you need to put out rubby dubby there are more humane methods available as opposed to the unnecessary suffering these pratices cause. i still reckon there is a certin ammount of bravado involved with these pratices. but it tells you a lot about a man's charachter, who gets his jollies from carrying out such pratices. sad little men indeed

yes there is only one boat up here operating out of red bay which does this, thanks god.everyone knows who it is as he has admitted to this practise on another forum and says he will go on doing it as long as he fishes for large specimems.personally i think it is a disgrace that fellow anglers who use his boat dont stop him or refuse to go out with him,.there are a lot of other ways of makeing rubby dubby without harming dogfish.  john
