Boat insurance

Hi all

My father heard that there may be new requirements coming in in relation to insurance for boats. basically what he was told is that if you launch out of any harbour that has an appointed harbour master that you will be required to be in possession of a boat insurnace cert in order to launch.

no idea how relaible this is and i havent been able to find more on it, anyone know anything about it? I know there is such a requiremnt in Kilmore Quay (i think) since last year

Like you Adam I've heard nothing "official" about this. It would be a tough job for the harbour master in Kinsale at the height of the summer!

hi well we fished kilmore a few times this year so far and have being asked for it also there is a sign stating you must show your insurance to harbour master

I've heard about it at Kilmore. As this is a private slip, they are allowed ask you for insurance before you launch. This is to cover themselves if you know a boat on the way out or in...

Haven't heard of it anywhere else.

Probably only a matter of time before it will be introduced in this country though lads, as in the UK it seems in a lot of places you must show a certificate of insurance and pay a launch fee! There was a situation last year where there was a permit system introduced by the local council to launch and retrieve boats at Skerries, they put signs at the slip an all, if you wanted a permit it was 30e and you had to indemnify the council from any claims in your insurance policy. load of crap really as its not enforced, think it was just to deter jetskiers.
