new engine for orkney longliner

Just looking for some advice on a new outboard for my longliner to replace the 30hp 2stroke evinrude on her at the moment.

Im looking for a 4stroke engine but not with a throttle handle as there is a steering column in the boat. ideally id want something with electric start and an alternator would be handy as the boat will be on the water for the summer.

The honda BF-15 or 20 seems ideal even if its a bit priceyer then others. Dont mind payin a bit extra for a bit of quality though. Tohatsu seems to be the cheapest.


Anyone any advice/opinions on what i should go for?

Nialler, the honda 15 is perfect for your longliner. 3/4 throttle will see you at max speed without tearing the sh1te out of the engine. There is little point going for any more horses TBH. 25 mile on less than 12 litres of juice one day on mine. A lovely little engine, quiet, plenty powerful enough and seriously economical. Mine came with electric start and remotes with a loom for charging battery.

cheers pete, yeah they seem like a good little unit alright, i heard they are known for being economical but that sounds brilliant!... would you be inclined to buy one new or go for a second hand one in the new year?

I bought a 03 model with tiny hours on it from a guy in Artane about 2 years ago. it wasn't overly cheap but it saved about 8-900 on the price of a new unit especially with the remotes etc too which can add up. It cost me about 40 quid for the bits and pieces, oils, filter, impellor etc to service from that crowd in finglas whose name escapes me. I wouldnt have any qualms about buying a second hand Honda in that size as the chances are they have been on something small that the speed junkies wont have thrashed.

The Tohatsu is a vastly superior engine to the Honda from my experiences using outboards on workboats where they were really punished so if there is a big saving to be made, I know which one I would go for Pete is right about the HP.... a 15 is plenty for a longliner.

I am open to correction as always here, but I think Tohatsu make the lump for the Honda, Nissan, Mercury and Mariner 15HP engines.

i no pretty much nothin about tohatsu, never even been on a boat that had one! but im defo not ruling them out. the honda's seem very good from what iv heard but there right at the top of the scale money wise, iv spoken to green marine and im trying to strike a deal with a couple of evinrude and yamaha 2 strokes i want to trade in. But im not set 100% on it yet. There doesint seem to be a great selection of 15hp electric starts with remotes around. Plus the alternator in the honda engine would come in very handy
