I'm off to Westport for a week with the family in early June. We're intending to book a boat for a day's fishing in Clew Bay. Can anyone tell me what to expect from the general fishing there at that time of year ?
The boat I'm thinking of booking is Shamrock I (Mary Gavin-Hughes), as its the only one I have heard anything about. Any feedback on either this boat or any others in the Westport/Newport area would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Hake
You can not go wrong with MGH on a day's family fishing.
June should see all the usual suspects within boat distance, so mackerel, scad, pouting, pollack, coalfish and codling (maybe a bit late by then), alongside the red gurnard (grey and tub available elsewhere) all will fall to baited feathers- that is if you venture out towards Clare Island.
There has been some nice haddock taken in the last few years but only to worm baits on a flowing trace. That was more in the direction of Bills Rocks but you need a real calm day to venture out there - a serious place and you woudl be fishing in 40-100 metres which is quite a bit of cranking.
If you fancy something more substantial there would be large numbers of bull huss and thornback residents, alongside all the flatfish and the skate! The benefit of these is that they are in the harbour entrance to Westport (which is nowhere near westport but let's no go there).
Overall the fishing can be quite mixed, down to the prevailing weather, but irrespective of the weather on the day, MGH will get you fishing and catching something.
Hope this helps...

Thanks Keiran for the very quick reply. Personally I would be keen to have a crack at the skate, but it would most likely be a bit dull for the wife and kids, all that waiting around ! They have all fished a bit before, but they do like to be kept active, so general species fishing would be better for them. I'll give MGH a call and let her guide the way.
By the way the webiste is great. Have only just come across it recently. I'm a Bangor ex-pat, now living in England - Sheffield. How far from the sea is that !! Haven't been out West in about 15 years (Achill last time) so really looking forward to it.
Thanks again.
