OK - as the title suggests...
Should I have a mono leader on my braid filled boat reel???
If so how long should it be and what B/S???
Also- what is the best knot for braid to mono??
(Braid is 30lb)
Cheers,
John.

A shockleader is a must when boat fishing over reefs with braid, abourt 6-10ft should do.
found this knot to work with good results

And over wrecks, as well as reefs. If i was over sand, I wouldn't be too bothered if i didn't have a leader.
That's an excellent knot donal's linked to. It's been my first choice for a few years now, though i've recently seen a reverse version of it that looks handy - must check it out before saying any more.

The Grinner to Grinner is a bit too bulky for the eyes on a boat rod, especially if there are the newer oval stand off eyes..... They are very narrow. I have also just started to use a leader after loosing a big Pollock (and a fiver to Rob) on the brandon Reefs... The fast drif had the line at a 30degree angle and the braid was getting knicked as it rubbed over the rocks.......
I also use the knot Donal linked to above.

Always use at least 15ft of 50lb mono as a leader when using Braid..It will take the shock of a sudden strike by you when hitting a fish therefore not pulling the hook straight out of his mouth.
I've always used the Albright knot even fishing in Norway and never had any trouble with it !!!

I always use the nail knot to attach my leader to my fly line
