Fishing In Thailand

Anyone recommend any Chartered Fishing trips or the likes anywhere in thailand?

If Dereck still has his boat out of the water, don't go out with anyone else. It wouldn't be worth it. Try some freshwater Carping at Jimmy's Fishing Park, off Soi 53 (or was it 57?) Again, google is your friend for contact details.

I recently spent some of my honeymoon fishing around Thailand. I would recommend tyhe Island of Phi Phi particularly, as not only is there plenty of fish to be caught from the rocks and beaches, but the charters are also very cheap. Best bet is to hire a long tail boat and skipper for the day, and be the boss, a whole boat to yourself for only a few euro.

Dorado is one of the usual target species, as it's the only larger species I caught I can't remember what else I tried for. But, they came thick and fast, hitting the bait so fast that nothing else had a chance.

The one thing I would recommend is that you bring your own gear, as the gear offered by the boats, especially the long tail boats, is utter crap. A 15lb class light boat rod, or as I use, US style steelhead trolling rods, one piece Ugly Stik baitcaster/trolling rods, they are perfect for 15 to 20lb braid, and matched with an Abu 5500 or 6500 will allow these mental fish to give one hell of a fight. Also take a light spinning rod. I prefer a five piece traveller rod with a very small fixed spool loaded with 10lb braid and a spare spool of 6lb mono. For terminal tackle, freelining or using a fairly light running leger is best. Circle hooks from 1/0 to 6/0 are a must, these thing cannot be beaten, but also carry some small hooks, sizes 6 to 1, as the temptation to catch some of the beautiful clown and rainbow fish WILL become too much for you.

Bait is not an issue, as you can catch bait from any beach using little Japanese Sabiki lures (tiny little feathered yokes), you will catch little two inch long fish (dunno the name) which the Thai people leave out in the sun to dry, and eat whole.

If you want more than fishing, check out Pa Tong in Phuket. Mental craic, great beach, loadsa nightlife, brilliant fishing, and it even has a decent tackle shop.

Hmmm. I didn't find a good enough tackle shop, so I couldn't say, as regards rods and reels.

Bits n bobs are good, esp hooks, lures and sinkers. They've got stuff that you don't see in Ireland, so you tend to go for that.

The tackle isn't especially cheap. Remember the 'bargains' that Thailand are famous for, are mostly knock off copies. The States is the place for cheap tackle. Check out Bass Pro shops online, it'll make you wanna shoot your local tackle dealer. Australia is also fairly good for tackle, the gear is reasonably priced and you can get gear that just isn't available here. The light boat rods are excellent. 8)
