steering for an orkney longliner

Alright lads, got meself a little orkney longliner, need steering in her but was told by a marine engineers place that new modern systems wont fit well, iv been told i need the old system with pulleys and cabels, which is the original system thats in my boat. dyin to take the boat out but want to make sure the work i do is good and safe, any tips or tricks anyone coulds share with me lads? all info would be greatly appreciated...

Got a remote rigged LL myself with teleflex steering. The main difficulty with fitting remote steering in a LL is the total lack of room on the narrow stern to fit the steering bar. My system is simple, Cable run from steering wheel to bar and thats it. I had major difficulty fitting it myself when I changed my engine and had to pop it into a local dealer to sort out. Its not a big job by any manner or means but its awkward. Its not a perfect set up, I dont have much of a right hand cut but it does the job just fine. As an aside, with remote steering up front, you will see a major difference in speed with the weight to the front of the boat. (up to 2 knots more with weight forward.)

I did my own steering on my longliner using a telefex system. As Pete says the narrow beam at the end makes life difficult - a quick cut to allow the arm through soon sorted that out.
As I had no console, I fitted a marine ply board from the floor to the top of my cuddy at one side to mount the steering wheel.
I'll post a photo later so you can see my handy work, sure you could make it neater if you took a bit more time over it than I did...
