Species competition.

I have never taken part in a species competition before.
Can anyone give me some information on tackle and baits to take with me for a species boat competition?

I'd say everything you can get your hands on :D

Where you fishing Anthony? As a brief guide, go for nice small baits and try and fish 1 below the lead and 2 hooks just above it or alternatively opt for a spreader bar set up. You'll probably pick up your pollack and coalies accidentally so this should be a good way of covering the bottom feeders. If its purely species you're after, whether you like it or not, you're going to have to target the littler fellas poor cod/pout/grey gurnards/whiting etc so 6s/4s/2s are as big as you should be going really. Small rag baits and/or thin slivers of mackerel should do well. Combinations of small red and yellow beads and little silver spoons may help you attract a few more fish, pink for pouting BTW.... You can bring any amount of variations of bait but for me anyhow, little rag and mack baits will account for the majority of bits and pieces.

I'm going to be fishing in Killybegs for the May bank holiday.

Really it's just an excuse for me to get out. Taking a young fella with me, it would be nice to see him win the Juniors section. He's really mad into fishing and has never been out boat fishing before.

Spent 4 days fishing Killybegs last year, nice venue, rag and mack will see you home there. Bit tackle hungry in parts all the same by the way so bring plenty of lead with you. Just dont be afraid to use shore scratching sized baits on occasion.....!

Guys would you go for the flapper rig setup (2up 1 down) or a flowing trace setup ( 2 hooks) with rotten bottom link coming from the boom.

The second could be easily changed when fishing for conger, saving time. But, tackle losses may be more frequent.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
