Hi all,

I am a new member and was hoping to get some help regarding getting a warrior. I've been looking at the 165, and all I've seen so far is good reports.
Do any of you know where would be the best place for me to pick up a second hand one ?. I am willing to travel throughout the UK.

Great Forum, some of the tips are excellent.

With Sterling the way it is, the UK is a nice prospect. The problem is that you would nearly have to line up 2, maybe 3 boats fairly close to each other and then travel and have a look.

When you are e-mailing a person selling a boat in the UK look for as many pictures as possible with close up's of the Hull and engine with the Cowl removed. This will give you a very good idea if the boat and engine in question is worth traveling for. Think of it along the lines of traveling to buy a car. You can save quite a bit of cash, but there are many pitfalls.

What the story with duties and taxes on bringing in a boat from the UK. I heard that customs were cracking down on this.

Thanks MAC,

I'll make sure I get more detailed photos. Is the Warrior the one to stick to or are other Warrior based boats as good ? e.g. see link http://www.boatsandoutboards.co.uk/view/F173166

I assume boats and outboards is the best place to look ?

Thats great Jim,

Links were very useful.
Does anyone know if there is a 'Top Ten' fishing boat review listing anywhere online?

I have about €12k to spend.
Ken.

There are reviews of boats and equipment on this site.

I don't know about the reviewers nor the site so you'll have to take it as you find it!! :)

you wont go wrong with a 165 and as mac said the way the sterling is at the moment it has to be worth going to england.i think if you get a receipt from the person your buying from stating its second hand they cant charge you any tax's on it.

That's good to know.

Do you know if the 165 rear bench seat effects fishiing in a negative ? or positve way?

Does it take long to remove the bench seat (I've seen them advertised as removable, but it never says what's involved)

What engine do you think suits the 165: Suzy, Mariner, Yamy ?

Many 165’s are running on 75hp engines, pure overkill, pure fun :D . I’ve driven one with a 60hp bigfoot Mariner 2S and it was a grand package. I ‘ve driven a couple with 75’s and they fly! Don’t think I’d go below 60hp though.

This is a breakdown of the engines used in the Cork Small Boats Festival in 2005, taken from the thread on Engines here: http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/bull ... php?t=5331 It is an interesting thread.

It gives you a flavour of what people are using. Four strokes have become even more popular in the last few years.

I took a quick look at the engines used at last years Cork Small Boats Festival. Of a fleet of 35 the breakdown was as follows:
2 stroke: 18
4 stroke: 15
Diesel: 2

Breakdown by Manufacturer:
Yamaha: 5
Honda: 4
Evenrude: 4
Suzuki: 3
Mariner/Merc:15
Johnson: 2
Inboard: 2

me and the bro have a 165 with a 60 yam pushes it great gets up to 30 mph

Wed Apr 16, 2008 1:03 pm

i had a 80hp yamaha 4 stroke on my last 165 it did 36knots .i have a few mates that have 60hp mariner bigfoots on them and do around 30knots the mariner is ment to be the best suited engine for them thought.

I made the expensive mistake of getting the bench seat in the 165, waste of space literally and makes it awkward boarding, they are easy enough to remove though, still have white silicone in the holes, keep meaning to do a better job :!:

:)
Lads,

Thanks for the feedback on the Engines and Rear seat etc..
I have been offered a Predator 160 with almost every extra and 60HP Yamy 4 stroke PTT. After reading a lot of reviews, I am STRONGLY tempted to go for it, as it is for the same money as a 3 years older Warrior 165 package (with less extra's)!

Any thoughts? :? Thnx, Ken

go for it so there a great boat also. the longer you leave it the harder it'll be to buy a boat the fact your getting nearer the season.

Thu Apr 17, 2008 1:09 pm

i wouldn't go for a Predator over a warrior.

they are cheaper for a reason.

in the 16 foot angling boat Warrior stand out by a mile per euro spent.

best package is with a 75hp. i have had both a 60 & 75 and would go for the 75 each time now.

the back bench is a waste of space and money.

look for a boat with a keel band. a step for getting in. a half canopy as its wet some days. box seats as they give more room for stuff.

also check the trailer for wear and tear as that can be costly.

Iona,

Do you know if there is a link to the 16 ft comparison you mentioned?
The Predator 160 i'm being offered has what most would consider a better engine (04 Yamy 60HP 4 Stroke PTT), than on the Warrior 165 (01 Mariner 60HP), and the bench seach fitted (which I didn't realy want).

My head is melted now!

there is no link just spade work.

do NOT but the first you see out of desperate syndrome.

there are lots of warriors about and now is a good time as more will come on the market.

what is your budget?

also the warrior your being offered is it a MK1 or MK11?

having seen the predator in action IMHO not a patch on the warrior but then again its cheaper.

its a bit like the car market where the cheaper brands will nearly do the same job but not as well. + factor in resale value. buy a hyundi and the resale price plummets in comparison to the more prestige models.

Thu Apr 17, 2008 3:10 pm

it's a 2001, but I'm nearly sure its a MK2 as it has the live bait wells.
My budget is €12,000, and I was hoping to get a realy good boat for that!

Does a 01 MK2 with a 01 Mercury 60HP sound expensive @ £9,400 Stg?
It has some of the Elec Equip, but no AUX eng.

Thu Apr 17, 2008 3:30 pm

its more likely to be a MK1 if its 2001. the Mk11 is more rounded than the MK1. A MK11 has an anchor locker on the front whereas the MK1 has a locker on the inside into the bow space.

£9400 does sound expensive, converted @ 1.2 euro it still on the expensive side.

God for 12,000 e i would almost sell you mine.

had a look at boats & outboards and can see a couple that would be better value. + most will negotiate on price by a few hundred quid when presented by a genuine sale opportunity.
