Fish Finder

Hi Guys,

Looking at a fish Finder at the moment. Would appreciate any info on the good and the bad units that are out there.

I have been looking at the Raymarine DS500X Color Fishfinder... I'm looking at €500 or so. Would like to know of a decent unit at maybe a better price, if one exists.

Any info you guys have would be appreciated.

I have the 600 and it is a class piece of kit .... the transducer and its positioning has been the only issue and thats my problem and the shape of me boat ....

Garmin 400 is worth a look. Used the raymarime once, thought the menus a bit fiddly, probably cos I'm used to garmin. Redcar Fish Co. (UK) are doing the 400 for €400 plus carriage. Cabelas (US) have them for €260 plus carriage. Good if you can get somebody to collect in the US.

There's lots to choose from. Make sure there's plenty umph (rms) and good resolution. It's probably a good thing to get the same make plotter as the menus will be similar.

Check what raider will supply for as sometimes they get good deals from the manufacturers.

Hi Jim,

I checked with Raider UK and John doesn't have anything in at the moment. I'll be going with the US route. I think I'll be going for the 500 at the resolution is good and it seems to have all the new Digital filtering and all that Jazz. Seem to me to be the same as the 600, with a smaller screen.

Now I just have to figure out the plotter options..

Hi kev.
Give Barry Murphy a PM.
He just got a plotter in from the states for small money. Around $400 I think. Nice bit of kit...

Will Do Paul,

Getting the sounder first. I have a couple of hand held GPS units that will do the job, while I'm finding my feet with the boat. I won't be too far off. I'll get myself a plotter before the summer, and I start exploring some water that I don't know.
